The latest issue of Rolling Stone has a sidebar in which a member of Explosions in the Sky names a handful of songs that inspire him.

Explosions in the Sky is a Texas band that plays instrumental music on guitars and drums. I know them only because of their association with Friday Night Lights (they wrote the film’s soundtrack and scored much of the TV show).

In fact, until a few minutes ago I was certain they composed the television show’s theme song as well, but I just found out that was the work of another Texan, W.G. Snuffy Walden.

Friday Night Lights, incidentally, is the best TV show ever not called Breaking Bad (and both shows feature the actor Jesse Plemons, which is quite a claim to fame for him).

Anyway, the Explosions in the Sky guy names The Ohio Players’ ‘Here Today and Gone Tomorrow’ as one of his five essential songs, which prompted me to look it up. This is one of those songs that I’d somehow never heard before but find instantly familiar.
