I was wondering how far into my Song of the Day series I could find an artist who I haven’t featured again until this day, so of course I had to investigate.
Turns out it was Nick Drake, whose ‘Things Behind the Sun’ was the eighth Song of the Day on Meet Me In Montauk, posted on August 1, 2008, just over five years ago today.
Looking back at that post, I’m happy to see that a Nick Drake fanatic stumbles upon it (20 days after it went live) and wrote effusively about his love of the man’s music. I love those little cyberspace connections.
I’m shocked that I never found an occasion to post ‘Pink Moon,’ the gorgeous little song that brought Drake back into the public consciousness (for those of us not as tuned in to his music as the aforementioned commenter) via a Volkswagen commercial in the late 2000’s.
But here you go… five years and five days and 1,844 songs later, a Nick Drake encore.
Pink moon is on its way
And none of you stand so tall
Pink moon gonna get you all
It’s a pink moon
It’s a pink, pink, pink, pink, pink moon
I think it might be overstating it a bit to suggest Nick Drake was ever in the public consciousness in the first place, let alone that he returned to it with this song. I’ve heard this song before, but with a gun to my head I could not have told you who sang it.
I’m not suggesting he reached a Justin Bieber level of fame, but he was definitely “a thing” for awhile in pop culture circles after that VW ad.
Really, I must not be in the pop culture circles:)
I just went back to read the comment you wrote about in the blog. It certainly was a lovely tribute to his favorite singer and from so far away! Amazing.
