Song of the Day #1,848: ‘Hopes Too High (live – partial)’ – Tift Merritt

IMG_1266Every time I think about a concert experience, I can’t help but flash back to the Tift Merritt show I attended with my wife this past April.

Merritt played to a room of no more than 40 people — I feel like I’ve been to dinner parties that seated more — and we were in the front row, literally able to reach out and touch her as she played if we were so inclined.

I’ve detailed the show already in this post so I won’t dwell on it here. But I wanted to post this (very) brief clip of one song.

Part of me wishes I had just held out my phone for the entirety of the concert, documenting it for future enjoyment. I certainly had a perfect seat to do so, and the recording would have been excellent. It could have lived on YouTube as a record of a wonderful night.

I tried it during the middle of ‘Hopes Too High’ but I lasted only 14 seconds. I stopped because it felt rude to put a phone between myself and the performance, and because I couldn’t capture the moment and live the moment at the same time.

I decided to live the moment, and I’m so glad I did.

Such a special experience. What I wouldn’t give to be that close and listen to one of my favorite artists.

Even though it is just a few seconds of recording, it captures your proximity and intimacy of the experience. Maybe that’s all the recording you need as evidence of your night.

I had a similar experience which I so treasure. I saw Laura Nyro at a small, small club on South Beach. It was an ecstatic moment, as you can well imagine. In fact, words can not describe it adequately.
