Song of the Day #1,557: ‘Quiet Heart’ – The Go-Betweens

It’s funny how some band names are familiar while the bands remain a complete mystery.

A week ago, had I heard of The Go-Betweens? Absolutely. Did I know they were an Australian indie pop band that released a handful of critically acclaimed albums in the 80s? No way.

I might have guessed 70s punk or 90s grunge. Maybe I would have pegged the decade, but only by luck, certainly not familiarity.

Song of the Day #1,555: ‘Boulevard of Broken Dreams’ – Green Day

I’m surprised to see that I’ve never featured a Green Day song through 1,555 Songs of the Day.

Not that I’m a big Green Day fan. I’m decidedly not. In fact, I dislike most of their music.

But I love American Idiot, their 2004 rock opera (which has since become a Broadway musical). And you’d think during more than four years of daily songs I’d have gotten around to it.

Song of the Day #1,554: ‘For All My Niggaz & Bitches’ – Snoop Dogg

My apologies to all the “niggaz and bitches” in my readership who might be offended by today’s Song of the Day. The Random iTunes Fairy can be politically incorrect.

This song is a nice example of why I don’t listen to a lot of rap. While I really enjoy the 90s G-funk sound that Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre made popular, I tire quickly of songs about drug use, gangs and women as sex objects.

Song of the Day #1,553: ‘Baby, Let Me Follow You Down’ – Chloe Katerndahl

So I know what I like, and I hope the past couple of months have revealed some patterns that suggest why I like what I like.

That raises two more questions: 1) Why don’t I like other artists who are similar to the artists I like?; and 2) Who else might I like if give them a chance?

I spent awhile cross-referencing music websites, Googling different genres, following genealogical patterns on AllMusic.com, trying to come up with a list of artists who fall into the same genome combinations I’ve described this week.
