Song of the Day #1,452: ‘Help!’ – The Beatles

Best Albums of the 60s – #9
Help! – The Beatles (1965)

Help! is kind of the forgotten Beatles album. It’s not their best soundtrack. It’s not even their best album of 1965. It’s a bridge between their more straight-forward early work and the ground-breaking music to come — the classic middle child.

But it’s also a terrific pop-rock album that would be the best thing ever recorded by just about any other band.

Help! doesn’t have a consistent sound or vision. What it has are some of the band’s best songs, including the title track, ‘Ticket to Ride,’ You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away,’ ‘It’s Only Love,’ ‘You’re Gonna Lose That Girl,’ ‘I’ve Just Seen a Face’ and ‘Yesterday.’

Not a bad lineup for the band’s fourth best album, huh?

Help, I need somebody,
Help, not just anybody,
Help, you know I need someone,
Help!

When I was younger, so much younger than today,
I never needed anybody’s help in anyway.
But now these days are gone, I’m not so self assured,
Now I find I’ve changed my mind, I’ve opened up the doors.

Help me if you can, I’m feeling down
And I do appreciate you being ’round.
Help me get my feet back on the ground,
Won’t you please, please help me?

And now my life has changed in oh so many ways,
My independence seems to vanish in the haze.
But every now and then I feel so insecure,
I know that I just need you like, I’ve never done before.

Help me if you can, I’m feeling down
And I do appreciate you being ’round.
Help me get my feet back on the ground,
Won’t you please, please help me?

When I was younger, so much younger than today,
I never needed anybody’s help in anyway.
But now these days are gone, I’m not so self assured,
Now I find I’ve changed my mind, I’ve opened up the doors.

Help me if you can, I’m feeling down
And I do appreciate you being ’round.
Help me get my feet back on the ground,
Won’t you please, please help me?
Help me

I personally like Abbey Road better than Help, but I won’t quibble with the ranking of this fine album on your list,

Oh, sure, Abbey Road is better. But if I were as a musician going to cover The Beatles I’d pick one of the earlier songs because they are constructed so much more openly (folky?). How about Help!? Sounds like metal to me without the current technology. I can hear Metallica doing this one and not Mean Mr. Mustard or even Come Together.
