I’m counting down bands that typify the 90s, but if I was counting down the decade’s best albums instead, Oasis’ (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? would place high on that list.
This record is an explosion of emotional Britpop that shoots for the rafters on every track. Brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher stopped hating each other just long enough to produce one of the seminal pop records of their generation.
The album is strong start to finish, featuring such standout tracks as ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger,’ ‘Champagne Supernova,’ ‘She’s Electric’ and ‘Some Might Say.’ But the centerpiece song — the one that will outlive all of us — is ‘Wonderwall.’
Written by Noel and sung by Liam, the song borrows its title from a George Harrison album but the sound is all its own. This is the sort of song that’s impossible to dislike (though somebody in the comments section will no doubt prove me wrong). How else can you explain cover versions by everybody from Paul Anka to Rihanna?
By now you shoulda, somehow, realized what you gotta do
I don’t believe that anybody feels the way I do about you now
Back beat, the word is on the street that the fire in your heart is out
I’m sure you’ve heard it all before but you never really had a doubt
I don’t believe that anybody feels the way I do about you now
And all the roads we have to walk are winding
And all the lights that lead us there are blinding
There are many things that I would like to say to you
But I don’t know how
Because maybe
You’re gonna be the one that saves me
And after all
You’re my wonderwall
Today was gonna be the day but they’ll never throw it back to you
By now you shoulda somehow realized what you’re not to do
I don’t believe that anybody feels the way I do about you now
And all the roads that lead you there were winding
And all the lights that light the way are blinding
There are many things that I would like to say to you
But I don’t know how
I said maybe
You’re gonna be the one that saves me
And after all
You’re my wonderwall
I said maybe
You’re gonna be the one that saves me
And after all
You’re my wonderwall
I said maybe
You’re gonna be the one that saves me
Well, I won’t disappoint you.:) This song kinda annoys me. As is well documented on this blog, I’m not a big fan of euro or British pop, and, while there are some exceptions, this song isn’t one of them. So, if the rest of the album sounds like this, I’ll probably pass.
