Song of the Day #1,068: ‘Songbird’ – Naya Rivera

Top Ten ‘Glee’ Performances – Season 2
#4 – ‘Songbird’ – Santana

‘Glee’ is packed with hot chicks but for my money the hottest of them all is Santana Lopez, played by Naya Rivera. What, you expected Lauren Zizes?

In Season One, Santana wasn’t given much to do other than look good, deliver sarcastic insults and occasionally make out with Brittany. But this season, she realized that those sessions with Brittany were more than just playful experimentation. The character has given show creator Ryan Murphy another avenue to explore the experience of coming out in high school.

Santana has a great voice, though she is often overshadowed by Rachel and Mercedes. I’d rank her second only to Rachel among the females (I’m not a big fan of Mercedes’ over-singing).

Today’s rendition of Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Songbird,’ a profession of love delivered to Brittany, was one of the more poignant moments in Santana’s Season Two storyline.

For you, there’ll be no more crying,
For you, the sun will be shining,
And I feel that when I’m with you,
It’s alright, I know it’s right

To you, I’ll give the world
to you, I’ll never be cold
‘Cause I feel that when I’m with you,
It’s alright, I know it’s right.

And the songbirds are singing,
Like they know the score,
And I love you, I love you, I love you,
Like never before.

And I wish you all the love in the world,
But most of all, I wish it from myself.

And the songbirds keep singing,
Like they know the score,
And I love you, I love you, I love you,
Like never before, like never before.

It’s funny – until I went back to find my favorite “Santana moment,” I had forgotten that Gwynnie actually had the lead vocal on “Landslide.”

It’s a testament to Rivera’s performance that what I remember most from this song is the emotion she is experiencing while singing it. The evolution of Santana’s character is by far my favorite thing that happened in season two. Not only was she the most consistently funny character, her fierce protection of Kurt, played for laughs but obviously containing all sorts of other layers due to her own questioning, was a season highlight.

And, yes, of course, she’s stunningly beautiful. But I don’t appreciate the crack about Zizes, who was yet another refreshing and original portrayal offered up by Murphy. He certainly has a gift for creating characters we care about.

She is a beauty and has a lovely voice.

This really was a beuatiful moment on the show. Good choice. (Oh, and please tell me you and Amy had to look up the name Lauren Zizes. Otherwise, I may have to take a vacation from the two of you!)

I’ve always thought this was a beautiful song, but in the context of this moment it was more powerful than any other time I’ve heard it. You could really believe Santana’s emotion – which is not always easy with her character – and she allowed herself to be really vulnerable which was a refreshing change. 🙂

Excellent choice, good man; excellent choice!

Amy, I, too, remembered Santana singing lead on ‘Landslide’ and was surprised when I found the clip and it was primarily a Paltrow song.

Dana, rest easy, I had to look up Lauren Zizes.

  6. Amy says:

I did not! I love the Zizes 😉
