Song of the Day #738: ‘OMG’ – Usher featuring will.i.am

Usher is a famous artist with whom I’m only tangentially familiar, probably because he releases the sort of music that makes for big summer hits. I think of him as the black Justin Timberlake (though maybe Justin Timberlake is the white Usher… which of these guys came first?).

Usher’s latest hit, ‘OMG,’ is a collaboration with will.i.am and I’m guessing it owes more to will.i.am than to Usher. He brings his brand of corporate techno-funk to everything he touches and my first listen to this song suggests it’s no exception.

Like much of will.i.am’s work, this song lives right on the border between truly horrible and pretty damn great. I can picture the songwriting session in which he suggested Usher spend the chorus stuttering in Auto-Tune over a bed of stadium chanting. Sure, why not?

One thing about this song completely annoys me, however, and that’s the substitution of “gosh” for “god.” I’m sorry, but OMG does not stand for “oh my gosh.” Usher has no problem singing about loving down a woman he just met on the dancefloor and singing the praises of her “booty” and “boobies” but gosh forbid he use the big guy’s name.

Grow up!

baby let me love you down
there’s so many ways to love ya
baby i can break you down
there’s so many ways to love ya
i mean like, ooh my gosh I’m so in love
i found you finally, it make me want to say
oh, oh , oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh,
ohh my gosh
it make me want to say
oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh

i fell in love with shawty when i seen her on the dance floor
she was dancing sexy, pop, pop, popping, dropping, dropping low
never ever has a lady hit me on the first sight
this was something special; this was just like dynamite
honey got a booty like pow, pow, pow
honey got some boobies like wow, oh wow
girl you know I’m loving your, loving your style
check, check, check, check, check, checking you out like,
ooh (oooh) she got it all
sexy from her head to toe
& i want it all, it all, it all

baby let me love you down
there’s so many ways to love ya
baby i can break you down
there’s so many ways to love ya
got me like, ooh my gosh I’m so in love
i found you finally, it make me want to say
oh, oh , oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh,
ohh my gosh

[will.i.am]
fell so hard for honey out of all the girls up in this club
this one got me whipped, just off one look, yep i fell in love
girl you something special, you just like dynamite
you’re out of sight
fell in love with honey like my, oh my
honey looking wonderful; fly, so fly
honey like a supermodel; my, oh my
baby how you do that, make a grown man cry

ooh (ooh) baby, you got it all
sexy from her head to the toes
& i want it all, it all, it all

so, honey let me love you down
there’s so many ways to love ya
baby i can break it down
there’s so many ways to love ya
got me like, ooh my gosh I’m so in love i found you finally,
you make me want to say
oh my gosh
oh my
oh, oh my gosh

This song was released in the middle of March, so maybe it’s not as shameless an attempt to court summer single status as some of the others are. I checked because the kids were both familiar with it being played at parties, none of which they have attended the summer 🙂

Then I realized… American Idol! 🙂 That’s how I know it. And it sounded so much better live. I’ll let you decide for yourselves.

I fell in love with Usher on American Idol, as he was such a generous and kind mentor. After watching this episode, I was all set to go buy an Usher album (the purpose of his appearance, after all). While I haven’t yet done so, I still have all sorts of positive thoughts about him. A purchase can’t be far behind 🙂

Oh, and as for the whole God/Gosh thing… is it possible he just likes the “sh” sound at the end of the song (and each line) better than the harsher sounding “d”? I agree that the notion that he doesn’t want to utter “the big guy’s” name is rather silly, so I’m hoping there might be an artistic excuse instead.

I overheard Amy playing this song while I was waking up following a night of blackjack ($3 table–oh, yeah, baby…I played for hours!) Although she was telling the kids that this was Usher, I kept thinking it really sounded more like the Black Eyed Peas and, lo and behold, the song was co-written with will.i.am.

I agree that will.i.am’s songs teeter between annoying and genius. The recorded version of this one tilted to annoying to me, though I do like the AI live version a bit better.

As for the gosh/god thing…will.i.am clearly has no problem naming the bug guy in “I’ve Got a Feeling” so I suspect the gosh was done for cutesy and not religious reasons, but who knows?
