Song of the Day #368: ‘Vegas’ – Sara Bareilles

bareillesToday we have another installment of “stuff my daughters like to listen to in the car.” I could really do a whole theme week on that topic, and maybe I will one of these days.

The good news is I’d wind up with a week of songs I really like as well. They started off with Neko Case and M.I.A. and now are partial to Sara Bareilles and Rihanna (and I don’t think they appreciate Rihanna for her looks, so there!). Just recently they’ve reintroduced Laurie Berkner to the rotation, and as kids’ music goes, she’s as good as it gets.

‘Vegas’ is their favorite Sara Bareilles song (as their aunt discovered recently when they kept asking for “Vegas” during a sleepover but didn’t remember who sang it). I like the song quite a bit, too… Bareilles has that Fiona Apple vibe I dig and this is one of the best songs on her fine debut album.

I can only hope the girls aren’t receiving some subconscious directive through listening to this song so much. I don’t want to wind up with teenagers looking to skip town for the strip.

[Note: This is a cute amateur video… I like stumbling upon these clips. I love the idea of creative people who might never strike it big still having an outlet that can get them watched by anybody in the world.]

Gonna sell my car and go to Vegas
‘Cause somebody told me
That’s where dreams would be
Gonna sell my car and go to Vegas
Finally see my name upon the Palace marquis

Gonna quit my job and move to New York
‘Cause somebody told me that’s where
Dreamers should go
Gonna quit my job and move to New York
And tattoo my body with every Broadway show.

Listen up now honey, you’re gonna be sorry
Can’t get out from under a sky that is falling
And you say
No fame no money I’m nobody
The way I’m running has sure got me down
On my knees.
But next stop, Vegas please.
Gotta get to Vegas
Can you take me to Vegas?

Gonna sell my house and cross the border
‘Cause somebody told me dreams live in Mexico
Gonna sell my house I got to lose ten pounds
And cross the border
And make sweet love upon the white sandy shore.

Listen up now honey, you’re gonna be sorry
Can’t get out from under a sky that is falling
And you say
No fame no money I’m nobody
The way I’m running has sure got me down
On my knees.
But next stop, Vegas please.

It’s always just around the corner or you’re
On your way to somewhere
That is bigger or better…
If you could only get there
It’s never your fault you can’t start your
Own winning streak
But I’d hate to lose you to the fortune you seek

I’m gonna lose my mind and sail the ocean.
‘Cause somebody told me there were
Cherry blue skies
I’m gonna fix my mind with a final destination
And have a deep sleep upon a sweet dream
I’ll never realize…no

Listen up now honey, you’re gonna be sorry
Can’t get out from under a sky that is falling
And you say
No fame no money I’m nobody
The way I’m running has sure got me down
On my knees.
Next stop, Vegas please.
Can you take me to Vegas?

Your girls like songs you like as well, as they are finding their favorites among the music you play for them. Clever 🙂 It reminds me of Maddie crooning “Mrs. Potter’s Lullaby,” when she was still young enough to pronounce “philosophy” as “milosophy” in “Hakuna Matata.” She still cites Counting Crows as one of her favorite bands, since it was one that we listened to that she continued to embrace over the years.

Of course, as the kids get older they will develop their own musical tastes and request to listen to “their music.” My first, and, until this song, only exposure to Sara Bareilles came from hearing “Love Song” on the Disney radio station, where we also were introduced to Colbie Calliat’s “Bubbles,” Plain White T’s “Hey There, Delilah” and a bunch of others I’ve since come to like very much (along with the requisite HSM and American idol stuff the station plays).

Luckily, so far my kids have not yet introduced any music into the family listening playlist that I can’t stand. Perhaps because we groomed them early on the stuff we like. 😉 Meanwhile, you can let Fiona and Sophia know that their aunt will have “Vegas” ready for their next visit!

Great little song. I heard her only released song on the radio the other day, “Love Song” and wondered if anything else of hers would hit the airwaves. I can’t imagine this being a big radio hit (I’m not sure it’s not mainstream pop enough), but it’s a good song and I like her voice a lot.

Anything else on her album you could imagine being released some time?

  3. Clay says:

I put another of her songs, ‘Bottle It Up,’ on the blog awhile back. Not sure if either of these will be released officially, though a lot of her stuff is on YouTube.

  4. Dana says:

Good song, but I’m not sure I get why your kids are so drawn to it. Not really all that hooky–certainly not in the way Love Song is. It seems a bit too amorphous for young kids to really dig, but, hey, good for them.

I like what I have of Bareilles quite a lot. I think she may be the real deal, but time will tell.

  5. Clay says:

They (mostly Sophia) do seem to gravitate toward some non-hooky music. Not sure if that’s good or bad. I don’t want to raise jam band fans.

  6. Kerrie Rueda says:

Next thing you know, Sophia will be off following Phish… yikes!

  7. Amy says:

When we couldn’t produce “Vegas,” Sophia settled for us playing Miranda Cosgrove’s “Stay My Baby” over and over (and over) as we made our way from the Ft. Lauderdale science museum to home. So maybe she’ll balance her love of non-hooky music with the odd pop anthem 🙂

  8. Amy says:

Thought the second link would embed, but no luck. It’s the same song, but the first link is to the official video.

  9. Clay says:

Funny that Cosgrove’s character in School of Rock had such a bad voice she had to be the band manager and now she’s releasing singles. From the sound of it, she should have stuck to managing!

  10. Amy says:

Alex agrees with you, but apparently Sophia has her own ideas. I’m guessing Miranda Cosgrove might be the first cause for disagreement in your mucically happy family 😉

  11. Amy says:

musically, that is. Not sure what a mucically happy family is 🙂

  12. Amy says:

for what it’s worth, Maddie far prefers Jennette McCurdy, who plays Carly’s sidekick. This is “So Close.” Meanwhile, I see a country showdown in our own musically happy family, as Maddie is gravitating more and more towards music like this. Wonder how Daddy Dana is going to handle his daughter’s growing love for country music 🙂

  13. Clay says:

I didn’t realize Sam was a singer as well. I like the sound of this one… I’m with Maddie.

Boy, Dana’s going to have quite a struggle. Imagine if she comes home with a Smiths album next!

  14. Amy says:

Okay, if Tom had the opportunity and didn’t tap that, the gay question is officially settled in my mind.

  15. Amy says:

    ha lol wrong entry

  16. Clay says:

So maybe he’s not gay but he’s banging the chicks on iCarly

  17. Amy says:

oh dear God… what have I done? 🙂

  18. Amy says:

to redeem myself, i offer another of Maddie’s favorites (country girl Jennette covering country girl Carrie Underwood 🙂

    The girl can sing!

  19. Dana says:

Maddie understands that she will be cut off financially should she ever bring a Smiths album into this house:)

  20. Clay says:

No comment on your wife declaring Tom Cruise gay because he won’t have intercourse with the underage cast of iCarly?
