Song of the Day #295: ‘Don’t Speak’ – No Doubt

no_doubtIt’s hard to believe it’s been 14 years since No Doubt first blasted onto the charts with their great album Tragic Kingdom, propelled by the singles ‘Just a Girl’ and especially today’s Song of the Day, ‘Don’t Speak.’

Even harder to believe is that the band actually formed nearly a decade before that release and made a living solely on their energetic live shows while hoping to be signed by a label. Yes, it was 23 years ago that a 17-year-old Gwen Stefani first picked up a microphone and embarked on a career that continues to evolve in surprising ways.

Song of the Day #294: ‘Need You Tonight/Mediate’ – INXS

inxskickI’m giving INXS an encore performance based on the positive response to yesterday’s track. Several commenters mentioned ‘Need You Tonight’ as a favorite INXS track and the YouTube gods have cooperated by allowing the track to live unmolested on their servers, so here you go.

Take INXS, whose infectious brand of sparse but danceable funk can be heard in modern bands as trendy as Spoon. Yes, INXS has released an album as recently as 2005, but for me their defining sound will always be tied to the mid-80s albums Listen Like Thieves and especially Kick.

Song of the Day #292: ‘Love is a Battlefied’ – Pat Benatar

benatarI don’t have many associations with this song, apart from some vague memories of the rather odd video. Benatar plays a troubled teen who is kicked out of the house and winds up dancing with strangers in a bar. Then one day a fellow employee is roughed up by the sleazy manager and she comes to the girl’s defense by leading the rest of the employees in a line dance not unlike the one the zombies do in ‘Thriller.’

And you can see all of that for yourself by clicking the link below (a far less obnoxious form of YouTube fascism is the “embedding disabled” setting, which prevents me from showing the video here but at least leaves it up for the world to see and hear).
