Song of the Day #212: ‘Angeles’ – MitchGettman

mitchOf all the artists in my collection, none better typifies the spirit of sitting alone in a room singing with a guitar than Elliott Smith. So I thought it fitting to close out this theme week with a cover of one of Smith’s (classic!) songs.

Mitch Gettman does a superb job on this song (as he does in all of his YouTube clips). I don’t know much about playing the guitar, but Smith’s songs strike me as extremely difficult to play and this guy really pulls it off.

Gettman hails from Omaha, Nebraska, and I have to wonder whether he and Kentucky boy Dan Hardin would have gotten any exposure at all in the days before YouTube.

It’s also nice to see such sensitive, talented souls in the heart of such deep-red states. Of course, Obama did pick up an unlikely electoral vote from Omaha’s district, so perhaps I should rethink Nebraska.

great song (though NOT a classic!), and nicely done. Meanwhile, what do we think of the kid’s room? Bed’s a bit odd, and how does he sit in that chair behind the bed. Sorry, but this guy could use the HGTV design crew’s assistance:)

I’m glad a couple of You Tube musicians finally got you to rethink the red states, since your sister’s repeated pleas certainly didn’t make a dent ;-P

Yes, there are sensitive souls all over this country, and what I love best about the Internet is the ability to get a glimpse into their lives. This kid has such a gentle voice. Very nice rendition.

As for his room… it seems he is sitting on a futon/bed, with some sort of loft platform overhead. I think it’s probably the perfect living/working space for a kid like him, and he’d likely be deeply disturbed at the notion of HGTV invading his space 🙂 Though his mother should be able to get in there and give him a little bit of help 😉
