Song of the Day #186: ‘Mary Jo’ – Belle & Sebastian

tigermilkI’ve decided to dedicate future theme weeks, at least for the time being, to five songs by the same artist or band. And to get us started, I’ve chosen everybody’s favorite Scottish septet, Belle and Sebastian. (Is there a Scottish septet you like better? If so, please let me know).

If I was forced at gunpoint to pick a favorite band (unlikely, sure, but it could happen) I wouldn’t hesitate too long before naming Belle and Sebastian. R.E.M. would be a close second, and of course one can’t forget The Beatles, but I have experienced more awe, joy and pathos courtesy of this group than any other. Over the course of seven albums and more than a dozen EPs, they have crafted some of the finest music I’ve ever heard.

Married Life

married_lifeThis movie sat on the shelf for awhile before getting a quiet release in March of 2008, and it’s easy to see why it had trouble finding an audience. Despite a stellar cast featuring Pierce Brosnan, Chris Cooper, Patricia Clarkson and Rachel McAdams, it is a bland attempt at a Hitchcockian thriller that never registers a pulse.

We’re in the middle of a weird trend of suburban melodrama set a couple of generations back. Revolutionary Road depicts a 1950s couple unhappy in their marriage; television’s Mad Men covers similar territory across the late 50s and early 60s; Married Life explores infidelity and secrecy among a group of friends in the 1940s.

Song of the Day #185: ‘Ojos Asi’ – Shakira

shakiraSeeing Shakira at the inaugural celebration the other day (on TV, that is) reminded me that it’s been awhile since I featured her on the blog. Having picked a ballad last time, I’ve decided to go with a more fast-paced tune today.

‘Ojos Asi’ is the closing track on Shakira’s excellent Donde Estan los Ladrones? album. It mixes Latin beats with Indian and Arabic influences into a heady, sultry dance track. The titles means “Eyes Like Yours” in Spanish, and having not looked into the translation, I’m assuming this is another love song.

Song of the Day #184: ‘Kissing a Fool’ – George Michael

georgemichaelTalk about squandered talent.

George Michael’s first two solo albums were about as good as anything coming out around that time. Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1, in particular, was an elegant collage of danceable pop and heart-wrenching acoustic ballads. It was hard to believe the guy from Wham! was capable of such resonant art.

And you know the rest of the story… forgettable music and memorable bathroom arrests galore.

Song of the Day #183: ‘Walter Reed’ – Michael Penn

pennI feel bad for Michael Penn. Here’s a guy with great songwriting chops and a nice voice who can’t seem to buy a hit. And to top it off, his brother is one of Hollywood’s most celebrated actors and his wife (Aimee Mann), while not a big star by any means, has massive critical respect and indie cred.

On the other hand, he makes a comfortable living at a job he presumably loves so I suppose I should save my pity for somebody worthy of it.

Penn has released five albums, though most people probably lost track of him after 1989’s March. That album featured his only bona fide hit, ‘No Myth’ (featuring the line “What if I was Romeo in black jeans?”), and it was all downhill from there.
