The second disc of The White Album is definitely the weak one. The inclusion of the horrible ‘Revolution 9’ alone keeps this one out of my CD player. ‘Honey Pie,’ ‘Yer Blues’ and ‘Good Night’ only drag it down more.
But it does have its moments. ‘Birthday’ is an enjoyable rocker, and ‘Helter Skelter’ is one of the most crazily unexpected successes in their catalog. ‘Mother Nature’s Son’ and ‘Revolution 1’ are also more than worthy.
But my favorite track on this disc is Lennon’s ‘Sexy Sadie.’
Continuing his trend of writing about men as women (see ‘She Said She Said’), Lennon penned this song about the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, disillusioned with the spiritual leader after a stay in India. The original lyrics had “Maharishi” in place of what would become “Sexy Sadie” but they were changed to avoid a lawsuit.
I like it better this way.
I’m learning a lot about the Beatles from your blog. I’m finding it very interesting as well as enjoying the music. Thanks!
This song doesn’t do much for me, though I appreciate the background. Never knew it . As I said before, I’m not crazy about this album as a whole, although I can easily edit it to one great album.. Off the 2nd disc, to me, the standouts are Revolution I, and Mother Nature’s Son. Never liked Helter Skelter and Rev 9 is masturbatory garbage.
Incidentally, Masturbatory Garbage is the name of the band I’m highlighting next Wednesday.
