Here’s where I’m cheating to fit 11 movies on my “top ten” list. But given that Ti West’s horror film X and its prequel Pearl were shot at the same time and released just six months apart it seems fitting to pair them.

I credit X with kickstarting my new interest in horror. In the past I’ve made time for well-reviewed scary movies, within reason. I remember wrestling with the decision to see Get Out in the theater before finally giving in because it was clearly dominating the cultural conversation. But that’s a far cry from a slasher movie that owes its biggest debt to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Song of the Day #5,341: ‘Landslide’ – Brittany Snow

My final musical moment from the films of 2023 comes from another movie I’ll discuss in more detail in coming weeks. This one is writer-director Ti West’s X, a slasher film set in 1979 and following a small crew filming an adult film on a secluded farm.

This scene comes about halfway through the film when one of the actresses, Bobby-Lynne (a delightful Brittany Snow), sings Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Landslide’ while the group is hanging out in their cabin.

Song of the Day #2,965: ‘Sex and Dying in High Society’ – X

x_los_angelesMy week of 1980 albums by groups I’ve never heard turned out to be a theme week on punk rock. Fortunately, the last band featured seems to be the best of the bunch, though that isn’t saying much.

X is a Los Angeles punk band that formed in the late 70s and released their debut album, fittingly titled Los Angeles, in 1980. They recorded regularly throughout the 80s before splitting late in the decade. They reunited a couple of times after that, releasing one more studio album in 1993.
