Song of the Day #1,632: ‘If You Wear That Velvet Dress’ – U2
Today’s track is one of my favorites from U2’s mostly forgettable 1997 album, Pop. It has a sleek, sexy groove, courtesy of Larry Mullen, Jr., and Adam Clayton’s subliminal rhythm section that kicks in about a minute and a half into the song.
I’ve always thought that this song is mixed too quiet for general consumption. If you listen to it on anything other than good headphones in an empty room, you’re going to miss half of it. And I think I mean that more as a compliment than a complaint.
Song of the Day #1,449: ‘Wild Honey’ – U2
U2’s tenth album, 2000’s All That You Can’t Leave Behind, was a comeback record following the failed electronica experimentation of 1997’s Pop.
The record was a deliberate attempt to return to the earnest rock style of The Joshua Tree — the style that catapulted the band to superstardom in the first place.
Song of the Day #1,398: ‘Red Hill Mining Town’ – U2
The Joshua Tree – U2 (1987)
Here’s the second album I purchased on CD after receiving my first CD player (a boombox style contraption that I think I might still have sitting around somewhere).
I had fallen in love with The Joshua Tree on vinyl during my sophomore year of high school, playing it endlessly in my bedroom while reading and playing video games (I wasn’t a very exciting child).
Song of the Day #1,352: ‘One’ – U2
My recent countdown of favorite 90s bands might have given the impression that the decade really and truly sucked.
And while I do think the 90s pale in comparison to, say, the 60s and 80s in terms of signature sound, some of my favorite work was produced during the decade.
To prove the point, over the next several weeks I will count down my 20 favorite albums released in the 90s.
