Song of the Day #3,258: ‘Chantaje’ – Shakira vs. The Beatles

I can’t pretend there’s any suspense in the penultimate Round One matchup in Montauk Madness. As much as I enjoy Shakira’s work, especially in her native Spanish, she ain’t putting up a fight against The Beatles.

Of course there is no shame in losing to the Fab Four. And this blog post led me to the discovery that Shakira just released a new album, El Dorado, which I promptly downloaded. So it’s really a win for her.

Song of the Day #2,890: ‘Maggie Mae’ – The Beatles

letitbeI debated whether today’s random selection should qualify as a Song of the Day, given that it’s just a truncated snippet. But I decided it’s an interesting enough snippet to warrant a post.

‘Maggie Mae’ (usually spelled ‘Maggie May’) is a Liverpool folk song that a teenaged John Lennon played with The Quarrymen. The Beatles gave it a smirking turn during the sessions that became Let It Be and the result was captured in this 40-second clip that closes out Side One.

Song of the Day #2,814: ‘Get Back’ – The Beatles

letitbeLast year I started a new ‘Decades’ series by focusing on my birth year, 1972, then 1982, 1992 and 2002, counting down my own favorite albums from each of those years and then 10-15 unfamiliar (to me) albums that received acclaim at the time.

I’m doing the same thing again, backing up a couple of years and focusing on 1970, ’80, ’90 and ’00. The next several weeks will be dedicated to 1970.

Song of the Day #2,499: ‘A Hard Day’s Night’ – The Beatles

hard_days_nightMy next Oscar Best Song snub is probably the most baffling of the whole list, given the popular and critical success of both the band and the movie.

And really, how could the Academy of Motion Pictures pass up the opportunity to invite John, Paul, George and Ringo to the ball?

But alas, not one song from my favorite Beatles album managed to score an Oscar nomination.
