Song of the Day #5,263: ‘Labyrinth’ – Taylor Swift

Continuing my ranking of the songs on Taylor Swift’s new album, Midnights

#4. ‘Mastermind

I love the momentum of this track in both the music and the melody. I also love the bridge, which dives into the insecurities Swift explores in several songs on this album. Lyrically, this is a novel approach to a love song, pushing fate and luck aside and centering Swift as the author of her own romantic destiny. An excellent closing track.

Song of the Day #5,262: ‘Vigilante Shit’ – Taylor Swift

Continuing my ranking of the songs on Taylor Swift’s new album, Midnights

#6. ‘Anti-Hero

The album’s first single is a blast, breaking the pattern of weak lead singles on her last few pop albums. Swift turns her critical eye on herself and delivers the world’s catchiest therapy session.

Song of the Day #5,261: ‘Lavender Haze’ – Taylor Swift

Continuing my ranking of the songs on Taylor Swift’s new album, Midnights

#9. ‘Maroon

I like the chorus of this song better than the verses, which suffer from awkward phrasing. Overall a decent vibe.

#8. ‘Snow On the Beach

As a big Lana Del Rey fan, I was eagerly anticipating this collaboration. Unfortunately, it’s a stretch to call it that. Song of the Day #5,260: ‘Midnight Rain’ – Taylor Swift

This week I will rank the song’s on Taylor Swift’s new album, Midnights, in order of my preference, continuing a tradition I started with 2019’s Lover.

Midnights is Swift’s fourth album in four years, following the one-two pandemic punch of folklore and evermore, and it finds her in a much different place musically and lyrically. While those records found her telling other people’s stories in an acoustic indie style, this is a highly produced pop album about her personal and professional experiences.

Song of the Day #5,229: ‘Anti-Hero’ – Taylor Swift

OK, so I messed up.

I had an album slotted neatly into my #1 slot for 2004. In fact, it was a no-brainer. I was looking forward to writing about it.

Then I discovered that, contrary to the date stamp in my iTunes library, the album was actually released in February of 2005. So it will make a lovely entry after I’ve worked my way through the 5s, but it would be premature to include it now.
