I felt about this album a lot how I felt about Kendrick’s project. They both have such an inimitable style and output where everyone’s expectations are so high that even when they’re performing at such an elevated level you still want more!

However, much like Kendrick’s album I loved how SZA broadened her range in what she was willing to tackle. While Kendrick’s journey was mostly emotional, SZA’s was far more sonic. With “Ctrl”, SZA’s debut studio album she essentially cemented herself as the new defining voice of R&B.

Song of the Day #4,707: ‘Kiss Me More’ – Doja Cat feat. SZA

Doja Cat’s ‘Kiss Me More,’ featuring SZA, is working its way up the Billboard Hot 100, landing at #6 in its third week on the chart.

This is a supremely catchy bubblegum disco R&B track, an ode to kissing with a chorus that borrows just enough from Olivia Newton-John’s ‘Physical’ to earn that song’s writers a co-writing credit here.

Song of the Day #3,860: ‘All the Stars’ – Kendrick Lamar & SZA

This week I’ll count down my favorite movies of 2018, two per day, from #10 down to #1.

This was the hardest top ten movie list I’ve made in years. I saw 70 films this year and enjoyed the great majority of them. It isn’t until you reach the bottom ten or so that I really disliked anything I saw (unlike actual movie critics, I have no obligation to see something I don’t think I’ll like).

Any of the films in my 11-20 slots could have easily found their way into this top ten, and might do just that if you ask me to revisit the list over time.

Song of the Day #3,434: ‘Drew Barrymore’ – SZA

SZA is another artist I discovered through my daughter Sophia. While I haven’t listened to her debut full-length album CTRL (released this summer) in full, I like what I’ve heard.

SZA is the stage name of Solána Imani Rowe, a 27-year-old soul singer born in St. Louis, Missouri, but raised in a predominately white suburb of New Jersey. Raised by a Christian mother and Muslim father, she hopped between their faiths as a kid and now practices Islam. As a girl, she wore a hijab until bullying following the September 11th attacks forced her to stop.
