Song of the Day #5,261: ‘Lavender Haze’ – Taylor Swift

Continuing my ranking of the songs on Taylor Swift’s new album, Midnights

#9. ‘Maroon

I like the chorus of this song better than the verses, which suffer from awkward phrasing. Overall a decent vibe.

#8. ‘Snow On the Beach

As a big Lana Del Rey fan, I was eagerly anticipating this collaboration. Unfortunately, it’s a stretch to call it that. Del Rey shares a writing credit, but her vocal contribution is relegated to some backing vocals and a couple of lines in the chorus. I wish she’d been given a verse like Phoebe Bridgers on the excellent ‘Nothing New.’ Apart from that criticism, this is a decent song.

Song of the Day #5,260: ‘Midnight Rain’ – Taylor Swift

This week I will rank the song’s on Taylor Swift’s new album, Midnights, in order of my preference, continuing a tradition I started with 2019’s Lover.

Midnights is Swift’s fourth album in four years, following the one-two pandemic punch of folklore and evermore, and it finds her in a much different place musically and lyrically. While those records found her telling other people’s stories in an acoustic indie style, this is a highly produced pop album about her personal and professional experiences.

Song of the Day #5,229: ‘Anti-Hero’ – Taylor Swift

OK, so I messed up.

I had an album slotted neatly into my #1 slot for 2004. In fact, it was a no-brainer. I was looking forward to writing about it.

Then I discovered that, contrary to the date stamp in my iTunes library, the album was actually released in February of 2005. So it will make a lovely entry after I’ve worked my way through the 5s, but it would be premature to include it now.
