Song of the Day #5,929: ‘Endless Love’ – Luther Vandross and Mariah Carey

Throwing back to the week of September 24, 1994, we find Boyz II Men clinging to the top spot with ‘I’ll Make Love to You,’ halfway through its 14-week run at #1.

At #2 was indie pop darling Lisa Loeb with ‘Stay (I Missed You),’ a song buoyed by its inclusion in the Reality Bites soundtrack. Loeb’s tune eventually reached the top spot, making her the first artist to land a #1 while unsigned.

Song of the Day #5,814: ‘Always Be My Baby’ – Mariah Carey

As Throwback Weekends have made clear, Mariah Carey was dominant in the mid-90s. The singer’s fifth studio album, 1995’s Daydream, became the most biggest her career and one of the top-selling albums of all time.

Buoyed by three #1 hits, the album reached Diamond status. Those three chart-toppers (‘Fantasy,’ ‘One Sweet Day,’ and ‘Always Be My Baby’) spent a collective six months atop the Hot 200.

This sort of pop-inflect R&B is definitely not my thing, so I didn’t find a ton to like in this album. But I will admit an affection for two of those hit singles.

Song of the Day #5,775: ‘Without You’ – Mariah Carey

Throwing back to the week of April 23, 1994, we have repeats in the #1 and #2 spot with R. Kelly’s ‘Bump N’ Grind’ and Ace of Base’s ‘The Sign,’ respectively.

In the third spot that week was 90s hitmaker Mariah Carey with her cover of Badfinger’s ‘Without You.’ The original didn’t make much of a commercial splash but it did spawn two hit versions.

Song of the Day #5,670: ‘Hero’ – Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey has the most #1 songs by a solo artist (19), so it stands to reason she’ll show up on Throwback Weekends. The week of January 8, 1994, saw her top the charts with ‘Hero,’ her eighth #1 in her first four years of recording.

Carey co-wrote the song but initially wasn’t moved to record it herself and planned to give it to Gloria Estefan. She eventually reconsidered and ended up with one of her signature songs, one she has performed at multiple live events, including the inauguration of President Obama.

Song of the Day #5,538: ‘Dreamlover’ – Mariah Carey

The week of August 28, 1993, saw two songs I’ve already covered in the #1 and #2 spots of the Billboard Hot 100: UB40’s ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love’ and Tag Team’s ‘Whoomp! (There it Is),’ respectively.

That brings us to #3, where Mariah Carey’s ‘Dreamlover’ sat on its way to a #1 berth the following week. This pop/R&B confection would be Carey’s seventh to top the charts, and ended up spending eight consecutive weeks at #1.
