Song of the Day #5,650: ‘Little Drummer Boy’ – Pentatonix

The 2010s has not been a good decade for Throwback Weekends, as the songs atop the Billboard Hot 100 did not shift much that year. It is also a year I was already blogging, so newcomers to the list have often already been featured here.

This week, at least, the glut of familiar songs among the top ten paid off. I had to drop all the way to #13 to find a song I haven’t written about, and it happens to be a perfect thematic fit on this Christmas Eve — ‘Little Drummer Boy’ by the a cappella group Pentatonix.

Song of the Day #769: ‘Little Drummer Boy’ – Bob Dylan

Fans who’ve followed Bob Dylan over his five decade (and counting) recording career, as well as non-fans who I’ve subjected to six months (and counting) of Dylan Weekends, know to expect the unexpected. But even the die-hards were likely thrown by Dylan’s most recent release, 2009’s Christmas in the Heart, an album of Christmas standards.

Was this a throwback to his Christian phase? A joke? Another acoustic covers collection along the lines of Good As I Been To You and World Gone Wrong? It was none of the above, or maybe all of the above and something else besides.

Song of the Day #152: ‘Little Drummer Boy’ – Bing Crosby & David Bowie

bingAs my sister mentioned in the ‘Life on Mars?’ thread, this was the clip that turned her from David Bowie-averse into a fan.

About as unlikely a pair as you can imagine, Bing Crosby and David Bowie joined up in 1977 to film what would become a classic Christmas clip. Crosby wanted to feature a talented young rocker on his yearly Christmas special and Bowie got the call.
