‘Want to Want Me’ – Jason Derulo

I’ve been anti-Jason Derulo for so long that I couldn’t help but put him in my top two this year. That’s how friggin’ great I find ‘Want to Want Me.’ It turns haters into lovers. It should be utilized in the Middle East peace talks.

I can’t go so far as to say that ‘Want to Want Me’ has turned me into a Jason Derulo fan — I still find most of his music absurd — but I can no longer dismiss him out of hand.

Song of the Day #2,505: ‘Want to Want Me’ – Jason Derulo

derulo_want_to_want_meIn Billboard’s fifth spot is Mark Ronson (and Bruno Mars) with ‘Uptown Funk,’ the smash hit that keeps on giving.

At #6 is one of my least favorite hitmakers, Jason Derulo. He’s come up a half dozen times on these Billboard posts and I couldn’t name (let alone hum) one of those songs. He’s the very definition of generic, bland R&B dance pop.

Song of the Day #2,285: ‘Trumpets’ – Jason Derulo

jason_deruloAt #22 is ‘Am I Wrong?‘ by Nico & Vinz, the song that — like a musical cockroach — refuses to die.

And I wish that I could say that something unexpected and amazing would round out my two-week Billboard exploration, but the 23rd spot belongs to the luckiest man in show biz, Jason Derulo. Never has so little talent resulted in so many hits.

Song of the Day #2,049: ‘Talk Dirty’ – Jason Derulo

jason_deruloAs soon as I saw that a Jason Derulo song was #3 on the charts this week, I wondered how long the track would run before he said his own name.

That’s my one impression of the Miami-born singer — that he speaks or sings his own name in every song of his I’ve ever heard.

This one turns out to be an exception. He was a woman say it instead, right at the beginning. I guess that’s artistic growth.
