The week of July 13, 1965, saw a couple of repeats atop the Billboard Hot 100 in The Rolling Stones’ ‘(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction‘ and Four Tops’ ‘I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch).’
At #3 that week, on its way to #1, was ‘I’m Henry VIII, I Am’ by Herman’s Hermits. At 1:50, this is one of the shortest songs to ever top the Hot 100.
The #1 song on the Billboard Hot 100 the week of May 4, 1965, was a novelty track by Herman’s Hermits titled ‘Mrs. Brown, You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter.’
When I first saw this title, I was reminded of daily commenter Dana’s question just last week: If you removed the parenthetical opening phrase of B.J. Thomas’ ‘(Hey Won’t You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song,’ would it still have the longest title of a #1 song?
Well, the answer is no… today’s SOTD has a seven-word title with no parentheses, topping the six non-parenthetical words in Thomas’ track. So that mystery didn’t take long to solve.
The Supremes’ ‘Stop! In the Name of Love‘ rules the Billboard Hot 100 the week of March 23, 1965. Right behind it was ‘Can’t You Heat My Heartbeat’ by Herman’s Hermits.
This was the British group’s first appearance in the top ten (and only their third single). Nine of their next eleven releases would repeat the feat, including two that reached #1 (‘Mrs. Brown, You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter’ and ‘I’m Henry VIII, I Am’).
