Today’s track is from Pistol Annies’ debut album, and was penned and performed by Angaleena Presley, the least-famous Annie.
This tongue-in-cheek tune explores the life of a hunter’s wife, and throws in enough hunting jargon to weigh down an 11-point buck.
It got me thinking… what came first, country music’s music or its lyrics?
Miranda Lambert is one of the artists making multiple appearances on this list, and she shows up first as part of Pistol Annies, the country girl group she formed with friends and fellow songwriters Angaleena Presley and Ashley Monroe.
The best supergroups feel not like stunts but an organic coming together of similar musical sensibilities. The Traveling Wilburys are an old-school example, and Pistol Annies work just as well as that grizzled bunch.
2011 was a big year for Miranda Lambert.
She married longtime boyfriend Blake Shelton (who was just about to reach a whole new level of stardom thanks to The Voice), notched her second #1 and eighth top 20 song with ‘Heart Like Mine’ (the fifth single from Revolution) and released the two best country albums of the year within a few months of each other.
Not bad for a small-town Texas girl.

Miranda Lambert is responsible for two of my top three albums this year: her fourth solo album, Four the Record, and Hell On Heels, the digital-only debut of Pistol Annies, a group formed with two friends and fellow songwriters, Angeleena Presley and Ashley Monroe.
Lambert had a hell of a year. She became the first artist in the history of Billboard’s country charts to have her first four albums debut in the #1 spot. And the Pistol Annies album debuted atop that chart as well.
The album I’m most looking forward to this year is Miranda Lambert’s Four the Record, due out on November 1. I can’t name many up-and-coming artists whose music I enjoy as much as hers.
But Lambert has made the wait a lot easier by teaming up with a couple of songwriting buddies, Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley, to form Pistol Annies, a girl group in the old-school tradition. Their debut album, Hell on Heels, was released last month as a digital download and still managed to top the country charts and land at #5 on the overall Billboard chart.
As a result, Lambert is the first country artist in history to reach #1 both as a solo artist and as part of a group.
