Song of the Day #466: ‘As Cool As I Am’ – Dar Williams

mortalcityI was first introduced to the music of Dar Williams by a high school friend with whom I’ve stayed in touch via email. She and I exchange book, movie and music finds and I can thank her for exposing me to not just Williams but Aimee Mann and Barenaked Ladies as well (and probably several others I’m forgetting).

The song she gave me was ‘The Christians and the Pagans,’ an amusing short story of a song about an eventful holiday family gathering between people of different faiths. It’s a charming and funny song with a sweet message and a memorable melody and it was enough to convince me to pick up her latest album, Mortal City.

Song of the Day #341: ‘After All’ – Dar Williams

darwilliamsDar Williams is another example of an artist I don’t completely get (I’m not a “fan” in the sense I discussed yesterday) but I love a lot of her songs.

Actually, I can go further than that… Dar Williams has written some of my very favorite songs, songs that move me, shake me, rip me apart and put me back together again.

One example is ‘When I Was a Boy,’ which I wrote about back in October (and which remains my #1 YouTube referral… clearly that song has touched a lot of people).

Song of the Day #83: ‘When I Was a Boy’ – Dar Williams

Dar Williams, over the four or five albums of hers I own, is frequently mediocre. But she is also frequently magnificent. She has written three or four songs I would stack up against anything anybody’s written, ever. This is one of them.

I’m not going to write a whole lot about why this song is so great, because I think it pretty much says everything all by itself. It’s bittersweet and charming and more than a little sad, especially for a father of two little boy-girls.
