I can name a few reasons why Beyoncé’s self-titled December 2013 release belongs on this list.

First is the industry-rattling manner in which it was released — as a complete surprise, with no advance publicity and no online leaks (of its very existence, let alone the music). Nobody imagined such a thing was possible in this era of transparency, let alone by the most visible star in the musical universe.

Song of the Day #2,270: ‘Flawless (Remix)’ – Beyoncé feat. Nicki Minaj

beyonce_minajBeyoncé’s surprise self-titled album came out nearly a year ago, but it’s the gift that keeps on giving.

This week, Queen Bey released a video of her Paris performance of album track ‘Flawless’ with rapper Nicki Minaj.

The remix itself was released in August, but given that every song on the album has an accompanying video, it’s only fitting that this one should, too.

Song of the Day #2,235: ‘Pretty Hurts’ – Beyoncé

beyonce_pretty_hurtsSometimes I have very practical, and selfish, reasons for picking a particular Song of the Day. Today’s selection is a fine example.

When I add new photos to the blog, the upload screen displays the most recent 28 additions. I have set a goal to always have a photo of Beyoncé among those 28. This week, the only remaining Beyoncé picture fell out of the mix. By presenting this song, and photo, I keep Ms. Knowles up front for at least another four weeks.

Song of the Day #2,187: ‘*** Flawless’ – Beyoncé

Well, I’ve run out of new albums to review this week, and next week I start a two-week vacation. So what better way to see myself off than with a Beyoncé video?

Here’s ‘*** Flawless’ from her surprise self-titled album. This song is all over the damn place and I love it.

It’s the only feminist anthem I know of containing the phrase “Bow down, bitches.”
