#4 – Aladdin (1992)

Aladdin was the first film from the Disney Renaissance period that I really embraced. Sure, I got swept up in the acclaim for Beauty and the Beast — the first animated film to be nominated for Best Picture — but it didn’t work for me the way this one did.

Maybe it’s as simple as this being the first princess movie that was really about the prince. The “street rat” Aladdin is a great character, witty and resourceful, mischievous but kind-hearted. The movies aren’t exactly lacking in male protagonists, but he felt like something new from Disney.

Song of the Day #3,993: ‘Speechless’ – Naomi Scott

I expected to really dislike Aladdin, director Guy Ritchie’s remake of the 1992 Disney animated classic. Advance word was toxic, glimpses of Will Smith’s genie had been met with the wrong kind of laughter across the web, and the Rotten Tomatoes score settled in at a discouraging 56%.

On the other hand, the film opened to a surprising $113 million over Memorial Day weekend and enjoys a 94% Audience score in contrast to its rotten tomato. So the movie is reaching fans, critics be damned. Which doesn’t always bode well for quality, but can make for interesting viewing.

Song of the Day #354: ‘A Whole New World’ – Aladdin and Jasmine

aladdinUntil about a decade ago, animated films (particularly Disney animated films) were — almost without exception — musicals. At a time when Hollywood couldn’t make a live-action musical that more than ten people would watch, Disney cranked out classics such as The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King and made hundreds of millions of dollars as audiences flocked to see people (and crabs and lions and dishware) belt out songs between dialogue.
