Song of the Day #3,373: ‘Love On the Weekend’ – John Mayer

It’s time for a little romance on Day 14 of the 30 Day Music Challenge, as we are called on to name ‘A Song That You Would Love Played At Your Wedding.’

I’ve been happily married for 20 years so I have a few options here. I can imagine I’m planning my own wedding all over again, but with 20 years worth of additional music from which to choose. I can imagine that my marriage has ended and I’m getting married again, say to Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Rashida Jones or Gal Gadot. Or, and this is how I’ve decided to play it, I can imagine that my wife and I are renewing our vows in a celebration including our current friends and family.

Song of the Day #3,372: ‘September’ – Earth, Wind & Fire

Pull out the bell bottoms, because Day 13 of the 30 Day Music Challenge asks you to offer up ‘One of Your Favorite 70s Songs.’

I could cheat and name any number of songs by favorite artists of mine who happened to record in the 70s. Tracks by Randy Newman, Elvis Costello, The Rolling Stones, Talking Heads, Billy Joel or Bruce Springsteen would be easy picks. But that would be adhering to the letter of the law but not its spirit.

Song of the Day #3,371: ‘Mama’s Broken Heart’ – Kacey Musgraves

Our next assignment in the 30 Day Music Challenge is to name ‘A Song That You Love From 2011.’ Not sure why we’re going with 2011, but I guess we should embrace the randomness.

I can’t recall any 2011 songs off the top of my head (the past ten years kind of run together musically) so I turned to Google for help. The biggest song of that year was Adele’s ‘Rolling in the Deep,’ a bona fide juggernaut if ever there was one. I named it as my own top song of 2011 here on the blog.

Song of the Day #3,370: ‘Take On Me (Extended Version)’ – A-Ha

Kicking off Week Three of the 30 Days Music Challenge, we arrive at ‘A Song That You Never Get Tired Of.’ We’ll have to forgive the grammar, and imagine that we’ve been asked to come up with ‘A Song Of Which You Never Tire.’

I only had one choice for this category, and it didn’t matter that I’d featured the song twice already. A-Ha’s ‘Take On Me’ is on the short list of my favorite songs ever precisely because I am never not in the mood to hear it.

Song of the Day #3,367: ‘One for My Baby (and One More for the Road)’ – Frank Sinatra

After trotting out the songs that make us happy yesterday, you might have predicted that today’s installment of the 30 Day Music Challenge would call for ‘A Song That Makes You Sad.’

As a self-professed lover of melancholy music, I have no shortage of songs to choose from today. Many of my favorite artists (think Aimee Mann and Belle & Sebastian) are known for writing sad songs. But I decided to reach back to a classic from well before my time.
