Song of the Day #2,740: ‘Who’s That Girl’ – Robyn

robynSwedish electropop star Robyn doesn’t seem to know how to capitalize on her success. In 2005 she released a self-titled album (her fourth) that broke internationally and landed her on the charts as well as countless critics-best lists.

Five years after that she released a pair of EPs (Body Talk 1 and 2) that were equally well-received. But in both instances, she faded away rather than taking advantage of the spotlight.

Song of the Day #2,739: ‘Sugarfoot’ – Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears

black_joe_lewisToday’s random selection comes from a 6-song CD sampler put out by Lost Highway records called T For Texas, T From Tennessee. All six artists (including Lyle Lovett, Willie Nelson and Robert Earl Keen) are from Texas, so I’m not sure where the second half of the title comes from. This CD was packaged with one of Lyle Lovett’s recent albums — maybe Natural Forces.

Song of the Day #2,726: ‘Soldier’s Song (acoustic)’ – Lucinda Williams

lucinda_blessedLucinda Williams recently announced that her 11th studio album, titled The Ghosts of Highway 20, will drop on February 5th. Williams has been reasonably prolific, releasing an album about every other year since 2001’s Essence. That’s after taking 18 years to release her first four records.

I’ve wanted to do another song-by-song album review on the blog, and I think the new Williams album might be just the ticket.

Song of the Day #2,725: ‘Good Girl Gone Bad’ – Rihanna

rihanna_good_girl_gone_badLater in my 2015 ‘top songs’ countdown, I will wrote about Carly Rae Jepsen’s album E•MO•TION, the best pure pop record of the year.

Today’s Random iTunes Selection comes from the best pop album of 2007, Rihanna’s Good Girl Gone Bad. This record has more R&B and hip-hop flavors than Jepsen’s but it’s no less a giddy hit machine.
