Song of the Day #2,596: ‘Good For You’ – Selena Gomez feat. A$AP Rocky

selena_gomezTaylor Swift’s inescapable ‘Bad Blood’ sits at #9 on Billboard’s Hot 100. When I first heard that song on 1989, it stood out as by far the worst song on the album. I never imagined it could be a hit, let alone this massive a hit. Go figure.

Rounding out the top ten is a track by one of Taylor’s besties, Selena Gomez. ‘Good For You’ is Gomez’s sexy “I’m no longer a Disney girl” song, following in the tradition of Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Miley Cyrus.

Song of the Day #2,595: ‘My Way’ – Fetty Wap feat. Monty

fetty_wap_my_wayFinally, at #7 on Billboard’s Hot 100, we have our first repeat. Fetty Wap’s ‘Trap Queen’ was at #12 when I covered the charts back in March. It has impressive staying power, despite being crap.

Fetty (or is it Wap?) shows up again at #8 with a new song, titled ‘My Way’ and featuring Monty. I wonder if this is a rousing cover of the Frank Sinatra staple.

Song of the Day #2,594: ‘Fight Song’ – Rachel Platten

rachel_platten_fight_songI can tell it’s been awhile since I’ve done one of these Billboard theme weeks because the first six songs on the chart are all new to the blog. It’s nice to see some fresh blood on the charts.

Rachel Platten finds herself in the #6 spot largely thanks to Taylor Swift, who has promoted Platten’s ‘Fight Song’ both online and in concert. Swift even invited Platten onstage to perform the anthemic track during a concert this summer.

Song of the Day #2,593: ‘Ragged Wood’ – Fleet Foxes

foxesThe Random iTunes Fairy is aiming for a theme weekend, it seems. As with Nellie McKay, yesterday’s selection, Fleet Foxes are a band I abandoned years ago only to second-guess my decision.

The difference is that McKay has continued to record in the ensuing decade, while Fleet Foxes released one more album and have since unofficially split.

Song of the Day #2,592: ‘I Will Be There’ – Nellie McKay

nellieIt’s been almost ten years since I last paid attention to Nellie McKay. Her 2006 album Pretty Little Head, on which today’s random SOTD appears, was an uneven follow-up to her delightful debut, Get Away From Me, and it removed any desire I had to stick with her.

In hindsight, that wasn’t very fair to Ms. McKay, who is undeniably talented at both songwriting and singing across multiple genres. Most people are allowed three strikes.
