Song of the Day #6,440: ‘These Boots Are Made for Walkin” – Nancy Sinatra

Nancy Sinatra owned the #1 spot the week of February 22, 1966, with her anthemic ode to getting the hell out of there, ‘These Boots Are Made for Walkin’.’

The song was written by Lee Hazelwood, who intended to record it himself, but Nancy convinced him it would sound better coming from a woman. The song’s title was inspired by a line spoken by Nancy’s father, Frank, in the 1963 film 4 for Texas.

Speaking of Frank, this song’s success made him and Nancy the first ever parent-child duo to each have a #1 hit. It’s happened two other times since.

One of those is Brian Wilson, who reached #1 four times with The Beach Boys, and Wilson Phillips, who have three #1s. Brian’s daughters Carnie and Wendy make up two thirds of that group, along with John and Michelle Phillips’ (The Mamas & The Papas) daughter Chynna. This pairing satisfies the criteria twice, because The Mamas & The Papas had a #1 hit with ‘Monday, Monday.’

I’ll let you guess the other parent and child in the comments.

[Verse 1]
You keep sayin’ you got something for me
Somethin’ you call love, but confess
You’ve been-a-messin’ where you shouldn’t-a-been-messing
And now someone else is getting all your best

[Chorus]
These boots are made for walkin’
And that’s just what they’ll do
One of these days these boots
Are gonna walk all over you
Yeah

[Verse 2]
You keep lyin’ when you ought to be truthin’
You keep losin’ when you oughta not bet
You keep samin’ when you oughta be a-changin’
Now what’s right is right, but you ain’t been right yet

[Chorus]
These boots are made for walkin’
And that’s just what they’ll do
One of these days these boots
Are gonna walk all over you

[Verse 3]
You keep playin’ where you shouldn’t be playin’
And you keep thinkin’ that you’ll never get burnt, ha
I’ve just found me a brand-new box of matches, yeah
And what he knows, you ain’t had time to learn

[Chorus]
These boots are made for walkin’
And that’s just what they’ll do
One of these days these boots
Are gonna walk all over you

[Outro]
Are you ready, boots?
Start walkin’

  1. Dana Gallup says:

Bob and Jakob Dylan and John and Julian Lennon came to mind, but I don’t think Bob or Julian had number one hits. So, I’m going to go with Hank Williams Sr. And Jr.

  2. Amy says:

Perhaps Johnny and Roseanne Cash? Love to reflect on these musical families.

  3. Peg says:

how about Nat king Cole and his daughter Natalie?

  4. Peg says:

I love the bit of trivia about Frank saying the line in the movie 4 for Texas 😂

  5. Clay says:

All great guesses! The correct answer is Billy Ray and Miley Cyrus, so Dana wins.

  6. Dana Gallup says:

Looks like Hank Williams Sr and Jr also both had number one hits.🤷‍♂️

  7. RussParis says:

Depends on the charts you follow. For example: Bob Dylan’s “Like a Rolling Stone” reached #1 on the US Cashbox chart in 1965 and “Murder Most Foul” reached #1 on the Billboard Rock Digital Song Sales chart in April 2020. (Not to mention that 5 of his albums hit #1.). Jakob Dylan’s band The Wallflowers had a big hit with “One Headlight” which was #1 on the US Mainstream Rock chart, the US Alternative Airplay Chart, the Adult Pop Airplay chart and the Adult Alternative Airplay chart. The band also had 3 other songs that reached #1 on the Adult Alternative Airplay chart.
