Nancy Sinatra owned the #1 spot the week of February 22, 1966, with her anthemic ode to getting the hell out of there, ‘These Boots Are Made for Walkin’.’
The song was written by Lee Hazelwood, who intended to record it himself, but Nancy convinced him it would sound better coming from a woman. The song’s title was inspired by a line spoken by Nancy’s father, Frank, in the 1963 film 4 for Texas.
Speaking of Frank, this song’s success made him and Nancy the first ever parent-child duo to each have a #1 hit. It’s happened two other times since.
One of those is Brian Wilson, who reached #1 four times with The Beach Boys, and Wilson Phillips, who have three #1s. Brian’s daughters Carnie and Wendy make up two thirds of that group, along with John and Michelle Phillips’ (The Mamas & The Papas) daughter Chynna.
I’ll let you guess the other parent and child in the comments.
You keep sayin’ you got something for me
Somethin’ you call love, but confess
You’ve been-a-messin’ where you shouldn’t-a-been-messing
And now someone else is getting all your best
[Chorus]
These boots are made for walkin’
And that’s just what they’ll do
One of these days these boots
Are gonna walk all over you
Yeah
[Verse 2]
You keep lyin’ when you ought to be truthin’
You keep losin’ when you oughta not bet
You keep samin’ when you oughta be a-changin’
Now what’s right is right, but you ain’t been right yet
[Chorus]
These boots are made for walkin’
And that’s just what they’ll do
One of these days these boots
Are gonna walk all over you
[Verse 3]
You keep playin’ where you shouldn’t be playin’
And you keep thinkin’ that you’ll never get burnt, ha
I’ve just found me a brand-new box of matches, yeah
And what he knows, you ain’t had time to learn
[Chorus]
These boots are made for walkin’
And that’s just what they’ll do
One of these days these boots
Are gonna walk all over you
[Outro]
Are you ready, boots?
Start walkin’
