Song of the Day #6,406: ‘Shadowboxer’ – Fiona Apple

Continuing a countdown of my favorite albums of 1996…

#5 – Tidal – Fiona Apple

It’s nice to discover a favorite artist right on the ground floor. Such was the case with Fiona Apple, whose debut album quickly became a staple for both my future wife and me. And while my wife didn’t stay onboard for Apple’s subsequent releases, I found them even more enchanting than this one.

Tidal does sound like a debut at times. It’s a bit overwritten and over-serious. It doesn’t have the playfulness or rhythmic experimentation of her next few records. But as an introduction to an extraordinary new talent, it’s a bracing and emotional work of art.

First single ‘Shadowboxer’ announced Apple as a unique talent, one whose voice and songwriting chops couldn’t possibly belong to a teenager. But third single ‘Criminal’ made her a star, its provocative video stirring up controversy and charges of exploitation. The song reached #21 on the Hot 100, giving Apple her only career entry on the chart.

Opener ‘Sleep To Dream’ is another standout, one with a musical muscularity absent on the album’s piano-driven back half. Gorgeous ballad ‘Never is a Promise,’ in which Apple demonstrates the full range of her peerless voice, is the highlight of Side Two.

It’s crazy to think Apple has released only four more albums in the 30 years since she dropped this wonderful debut.

[Verse 1]
Once my lover, now my friend
What a cruel thing to pretend
What a cunning way to condescend
Once my lover, and now my friend

[Verse 2]
Oh, you creep up like the clouds
And you set my soul at ease
Then you let your love abound
And you bring me to my knees

[Pre-Chorus]
Oh, it’s evil, babe
The way you let your grace enrapture me
When well you know I’d be insane
To ever let that dirty game recapture me

[Chorus]
You made me a shadowboxer, baby
I wanna be ready for what you do
I’ve been swinging around me
‘Cause I don’t know when you’re gonna make your move

[Verse 3]
Oh, your gaze is dangerous
And you fill your space so sweet
If I let you get too close
You’ll set your spell on me

[Verse 4]
So, darlin’, I just wanna say
Just in case I don’t come through
I was on to every play
I just wanted you

[Pre-Chorus]
Oh, it’s so evil, my love
The way you’ve no reverence to my concern
So I’ll be sure to stay wary of you, love
To save the pain of once my flame and twice my burn

[Chorus]
So, I’m a shadowboxer, baby
I wanna be ready for what you do
And I’ve been swinging around at nothing
I don’t know when you’re gonna make your move

Yeah, I’m a shadowboxer, baby
I wanna be ready for what you do
And I’ve been swinging around me
‘Cause I don’t know when you’ll make your move
