Before getting to this week’s featured Throwback Weekend selection, I have to note that I missed by one week my chance to highlight what is perhaps my all-time favorite song: A-Ha’s ‘Take On Me.’ That track enjoyed its one and only week atop the Billboard Hot 100 on the week ending October 19, 1985.
Of course, ‘Take On Me’ has already shown up on the blog in many different forms, so I would have ended up writing about the #2 song anyway. And that happens to be the song that replaced ‘Take On Me’ at #1 the following week — Whitney Houston’s ‘Saving All My Love For You.’
This was the fourth single from Houston’s self-titled debut album, and her first song to reach #1. It was soon followed by a run of six straight #1s on her way to 11 total (the seventh most by any artist in history). Houston’s run of seven consecutive #1s is the most by any act. Even The Beatles managed only six.
‘Saving All My Love For You’ was first recorded by Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. in 1978. One of the song’s writers, Michael Masser, heard Houston sing another of his compositions (‘The Greatest Love of All’) and offered her this one for her debut album.
Of course Houston sings the hell out of the track, earning her first Grammy for the recording (Best Female Pop Vocal Performance). It was the first of six Grammy wins out of 25 nominations for the star.
Lyrically, the song is rather icky, told from the perspective of a mistress who is committed to her married-with-children lover.
A few stolen moments is all that we shared
You’ve got your family and they need you there
Though I try to resist being last on your list
But no other man’s gonna do
So I’m saving all my love for you
[Verse 2]
It’s not very easy living all alone
My friends try and tell me find a man of my own
But each time I try, I just break down and cry
‘Cause I’d rather be home feeling blue
So I’m saving all my love for you
[Bridge]
You used to tell me we’d run away together
Love gives you the right to be free
You said, “Be patient, just wait a little longer.”
But that’s just an old fantasy
[Verse 3]
I’ve got to get ready
Just a few minutes more
Gonna get that old feeling
When you walk through that door
‘Cause tonight is the night for a feeling alright
We’ll be making love the whole night through
So I’m saving all my love
Yes, I’m saving all my love
Yes, I’m saving all my love for you
[Verse 4]
No other woman is gonna love you more
‘Cause tonight is the night that I’m feeling alright
We’ll be making love the whole night through
So I’m saving all my love
Yeah, I’m saving all my loving
Yes, I’m saving all my love for you
For you, for you
I had never paid close enough attention to the lyrics. I wonder how often this has been played at weddings based only on the title/chorus?
was never a fan of her music even though I admire her powerful voice
