Song of the Day #6,244: ‘I Got You Babe’ – Sonny & Cher

Sonny & Cher owned the #1 spot of Billboard’s Hot 100 the week of August 10, 1965 with ‘I Got You Babe,’ their signature song.

Written by Bono, this was the first single from the duo’s debut album, Look at Us. Cher wasn’t a fan of the song at first, doubting it would be a hit, but it ended up topping the charts for three weeks and selling more than a million copies.

I didn’t realize Bono was a writer and producer for Phil Spector, but listening to this track that makes perfect sense. It doesn’t quite utilize Spector’s famous Wall of Sound production, but it’s in the ballpark. And it captures the vibe of that era as well as anything.

[Verse 1]
They say we’re young and we don’t know
We won’t find out until we grow
Well I don’t know if all that’s true
‘Cause you got me, and baby, I got you

[Chorus]
Babe
I got you babe, I got you babe

[Verse 2]
They say our love won’t pay the rent
Before it’s earned, our money’s all been spent
I guess that’s so, we don’t have a pot
But at least I’m sure of all the things we got

[Chorus]
Babe
I got you babe, I got you babe

[Verse 3]
I got flowers in the spring, I got you to wear my ring
And when I’m sad, you’re a clown
And if I get scared, you’re always around
So let them say your hair’s too long
Cause I don’t care, with you I can’t go wrong
Then put your little hand in mine
There ain’t no hill or mountain we can’t climb

[Chorus]
Babe
I got you babe, I got you babe

[Bridge]
I got you to hold my hand
I got you to understand
I got you to walk with me
I got you to talk with me
I got you to kiss goodnight
I got you to hold me tight
I got you, I won’t let go
I got you to love me so

[Chorus: Both]
I got you babe
I got you babe
I got you babe

For some reason I always thought this was a 70s song. I was never a fan of the song, though it was the perfect choice for the morning radio in Groundhog Day.

I was a huge fan of Cher’s and still am. Always loved watching their show and them doing this song ❤️
