Song of the Day #6,227: ‘Light My Fire’ – The Doors

The next Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee from the Class of 2011 is not The Doors, but rather the man who signed them (along with many other artists) to his Elektra Records label — Jac Holzman.

Holzman was one of two recipients of 2011’s Ahmet Ertegun Award, given to non-performers who have made a substantial behind-the-scenes contribution to popular music.

Elektra was home to such luminaries as Queen, Carly Simon, Harry Chapin, Bread, and Judy Collins. The label started as a major player in the folk movement but shifted to rock in the 70s. Elektra artists were popular but most had impact far beyond their sales, influencing other performers for generations.

Later in his career, Holzman was a pioneer in both the home video and video game industries. He was also on the ground floor of the project that eventually became MTV.

Seventy-five years after founding Elektra, Holzman is still with us. He’ll turn 94 in September.

[Verse 1]
You know that it would be untrue
You know that I would be a liar
If I was to say to you
Girl, we couldn’t get much higher

[Chorus]
Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire

[Verse 2]
The time to hesitate is through
No time to wallow in the mire
Try now, we can only lose
And our love become a funeral pyre

[Chorus]
Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire, yeah

[Verse 3]
The time to hesitate is through
No time to wallow in the mire
Try now, we can only lose
And our love become a funeral pyre

[Chorus]
Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire, yeah

[Verse 4]
You know that it would be untrue
You know that I would be a liar
If I was to say to you
Girl, we couldn’t get much higher

[Chorus]
Come on baby, light my fire
Come on baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire
Try to set the night on fire
Try to set the night on fire
Try to set the night on fire

I certainly know the label, but am not familiar with Elektra’s founder.

Jac Holzman’s book “Follow the Music: The Life and High Times of Elektra Records in the Great Years of American Pop Culture” is a must-read for anyone interested in that period of music. Great book.
