The week of July 13, 1965, saw a couple of repeats atop the Billboard Hot 100 in The Rolling Stones’ ‘(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction‘ and Four Tops’ ‘I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch).’
At #3 that week, on its way to #1, was ‘I’m Henry VIII, I Am’ by Herman’s Hermits. At 1:50, this is one of the shortest songs to ever top the Hot 100.
The original song was written in 1910 by Fred Murray and R. P. Weston and performed in British music halls. In 1961, British rocker Joe Brown released a truncated version of the tune.
Herman’s Hermits used Brown’s arrangement for their recording and performed it with a speed and sassiness that previewed the early punk movement.
The song gave the band its second U.S. chart-topper, only a few months after the first (‘Mrs. Brown, You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter‘). They reached the Top 10 six more times, but never reached #1 again.
‘enery the Eighth I am, I am
I got married to the widow next door
She’s been married seven times before
And every one was an ‘enery (‘enery)
She wouldn’t have a Willy or a Sam (no Sam!)
I’m her eighth old man, I’m ‘enery
‘enery the Eighth I amSecond verse same as the firstI’m ‘enery the Eighth I am
‘enery the Eighth I am, I am
I got married to the widow next door
She’s been married seven times before
And every one was an ‘enery (Henry)
She wouldn’t have a Willy or a Sam (no Sam!)
I’m her eighth old man, I’m ‘enery
‘enery the Eighth I am
I’m ‘enery the Eighth I am
‘enry the Eighth I am, I am
I got married to the widow next door
She’s been married seven times before
And every one was an ‘enery (Henery)
She wouldn’t have a Willy or a Sam (no Sam!)
I’m her eighth old man, I’m Henery
Henry the eighth I am
H-E-N-R-Y
‘enery (Henery)
‘enery (Henry)
‘enery the Eighth I am, I am
‘enry the Eighth I am
