Song of the Day #6,215: ‘Learnin’ the Blues’ – Frank Sinatra

Throwing back to the week of July 12, 1955, we find Bill Haley & His Comets holding on to the top spot of the pop chart with ‘Rock Around the Clock.’

That brings us to #2, and the first appearance of Mr. Frank Sinatra on Throwback Weekends. The song is the Dolores “Vicki” Silvers-penned ‘Learnin’ the Blues.’ I’m excited to hear frequent commenter Peggy chime in on this one.

This song eventually reached #1, and was the eighth chart-topper for Sinatra (but the first on this incarnation of the Billboard chart). He would have two more in his career, with 1966’s ‘Strangers in the Night’ and 1967’s ‘Somethin’ Stupid’ (a duet with daughter Nancy).

The day I’m writing this post has been Sinatra-heavy. In the morning I watched the 1958 Vincente Minnelli film Some Came Running, a pulpy melodrama with Sinatra in the lead. And in the afternoon I watched This is Spinal Tap, where Bruno Kirby’s limo driver character opines about “a life like Frank’s.”

I’m happy to close my day out, and start yours, with another dose of the legend.

[Verse 1]
The tables are empty
The dance floor’s deserted
You play the same love song
It’s the 10th time you’ve heard it

[Chorus]
That’s the beginning
Just one of the clues
You’ve had your first lesson
In learnin’ the blues

[Verse 2]
The cigarettes you light
One after another
Won’t help you forget her
And the way that you love her

[Chorus]
You’re only burnin’
A torch you can’t lose
But you’re on the right track
For learnin’ the blues

[Verse 3]
When you’re at home alone
The blues will taunt you constantly
When you’re out in a crowd
The blues will haunt your memory

[Verse 4]
The nights when you don’t sleep
The whole night you’re crying
But you can’t forget her
Soon you even stop trying

[Chorus]
You’ll walk that floor
And wear out your shoes
When you feel your heart break
You’re learnin’ the blues

[Bridge]
When you’re at home alone
The blues will taunt you constantly
When you’re out in a crowd
Those blues will haunt your memory

[Verse 4]
The nights when you don’t sleep
That whole night you’re crying
But you can’t forget her
Soon you even stop trying

[Chorus]
You’ll walk the floor
And you’ll wear out your shoes
When you feel your heart break
You’re learnin’ those blues
