Song of the Day #6,202: ‘Wooly Bully’ – Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs

The top of the Hot 100 was pretty stacked the week of June 29, 1965. At #1 was ‘I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)’ by Four Tops, followed by The Rolling Stones’ ‘(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.’ Then came The Byrds ‘Mr. Tambourine Man.’

And if that grouping isn’t eclectic (and great) enough for you, there was Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs with their biggest hit, ‘Wooly Bully.’

This garage rock ditty with nonsense lyrics ended up as Billboard’s #1 song of 1965, despite never reaching the top spot on a weekly chart (it peaked at #2). It was the first song to pull that off; the most recent was Dua Lipa’s ‘Levitating.’

‘Wooly Bully’ was written by Domingo Samudio (aka Sam the Sham), and nods to his Tex-Mex background in the bilingual opening countdown. Samudio says the band recorded three takes of the song, all different. This was the first.

[Intro]
Uno, dos
One, two, tres, cuatro
Yes, Wooly Bully
Watch it now, watch it
Here he come, here he come
Watch it now, he git ya

[Verse 1]
Matty told Hatty about a thing she saw
Had two big horns and a wooly jaw
Wooly Bully, Wooly Bully, yeah, drive
Wooly Bully, Wooly Bully, Wooly Bully

[Verse 2]
Hatty told Matty, “Let’s don’t take no chance
Let’s not be L-seven, come and learn to dance”
Wooly Bully, Wooly Bully
Wooly Bully, Wooly Bully, Wooly Bully

[Bridge]
Watch it now, watch it, watch it, watch it
Yeah
Yeah, drive, drive, drive

[Verse 3]
Matty told Hatty, “That’s the thing to do
Get you someone really pull the wool with you”
Wooly Bully, Wooly Bully
Wooly Bully, Wooly Bully, Wooly Bully

[Outro]
Watch it now, watch it, here he come
You got it, you got it

Great song. Another aside from your (possibly) oldest semi-regular commenter: The first single I ever purchased was Sam the Sham and The Pharaohs “L’il Red Riding Hood” in 1966 – followed closely by “They’re Coming To Take Me Away” by Napoleon VII. Yes, 5th grade me was into novelty singles. Here’s a link to the Riding Hood song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_FA85RO89HA

    Ah-ooooooooooooooohhhh!
