In the #3 spot of the latest Billboard Hot 100 installment is ‘Ordinary,’ a folk-pop love song by singer-songwriter Alex Warren.
Warren became famous for skateboard and prank videos on YouTube starting when he was 10 years old. He later co-founded the Hype House collective, a group of TikTok influencers who shared a Los Angeles mansion. He kicked off his music career in 2021 and had little success in the U.S. before this year.
‘Ordinary’ picked up steam on TikTok, and really kicked into high gear when he performed it live on the Love is Blind reunion special. That was enough to push it to #3.
Warren’s career is a microcosm of how different the music industry is today. The YouTube to TikTok to reality show pipeline is certainly a product of the times.

My first exposure to this song was Ed Sheeran gassing it up on his Instagram as he brought Alex Warren out at one of his pop ups to perform “Ordinary” with him. I thought given this glowing co-sign, the song must be something spectacular. This is my first time hearing in its entirety and I must confess I am quite unimpressed.
I find the vocal performance to be a bit lazy and while I see how the hook is catchy, I just don’t think this song is doing anything particularly unique. Overall, kind of just a trite love song. I can’t see myself returning to it and believe this man should stick to skateboarding!
