Throwing back to the week of April 26, 1975, we find country crooner B.J. Thomas atop the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘(Hey Won’t You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song.’
This was Thomas’ second #1 hit on this chart, following his recording of ‘Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On MY Head,’ which appeared in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
This song set a record for the longest title of a #1 song, an honor it held on to until 1981, when it was beaten out by a track commonly referred to as ‘Stars on 45.‘ That single was a medley of a dozen other songs, mostly by The Beatles, set to a disco beat.
Due to copyright issues that required each song to be listed in the title, the official title of ‘Stars on 45’ is (deep breath) ‘Medley: Intro ‘Venus’/Sugar Sugar/No Reply/I’ll Be Back/Drive My Car/Do You Want to Know a Secret/We Can Work It Out/I Should Have Known Better/Nowhere Man/You’re Going to Lose That Girl/Stars on 45.’
But that’s a technicality. I think today’s SOTD still deserves credit as the #1 hit with the longest legitimate title. It’s a lovely example of a subgenre called Countrypolitan, popular in the early 80s, which gave traditional country music a more polished sound including strings and horns.
And the feeling just got right
For a brand new love song
Somebody done somebody wrong song
Hey, won’t you play another
Somebody done somebody wrong song
And make me feel at home
While I miss my baby, while I miss my baby
So please play for me a sad melody
So sad that it makes everybody cry
A real hurting song
About a love that’s gone wrong
Cause I don’t want to cry all alone
Hey, won’t you play another
Somebody done somebody wrong song
And make me feel at home
While I miss my baby, while I miss my baby
So please play for me a sad melody
So sad that it makes everybody cry
A real hurting song
About a love that’s gone wrong
Cause I don’t want to cry all alone
Hey, won’t you play another
Somebody done somebody wrong song
And make me feel at home
While I miss my baby, while I miss my baby
(Hey, won’t you play)
Won’t you play
Another somebody done somebody wrong song
And make me feel at home
While I miss my baby, while I miss my baby
(Hey, won’t you play)
Won’t you play
Another somebody done somebody wrong song
And make me feel at home
While I miss my baby, while I miss my baby
I never knew that about the “Stars on 45” real title, but I agree with you that the Thomas song deserves the honor- though I do think the parenthetical could be dropped and am curious whether the song would’ve still had the longest title without it.
wow that is a mouthful!
