Song of the Day #6,092: ‘Layla’ – Derek and the Dominos

Today’s featured Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee is not Derek and the Dominos. Nor is it Eric Clapton, who is a member of the Hall three times over but not with this band (he’s in as a solo artist as well as with Cream and The Yardbirds).

Instead, I chose this song to acknowledge its producer, Tom Dowd, one of the few Rock Hall members who made it in for his engineering and producing resume.

Dowd was inducted in the Musical Excellence category, which is reserved for less heralded artists who likely won’t make it in through the voting process. These inductees are chosen by a special committee.

I don’t know the name Tom Dowd, but reading through his career highlights it’s easy to see why he was selected for this honor. He has worked in every conceivable genre and with a laundry list of talented people who could make up their own Hall of Fame.

Just some of those collaborators: The Allman Brothers Band, the Bee Gees, Ray Charles, Chicago, Eric Clapton, John Coltrane, Eagles, The Four Seasons, Aretha Franklin, Kenny Loggins, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Meat Loaf, Willie Nelson, Otis Redding, Diana Ross, Sonny & Cher, Dusty Springfield, and Rod Stewart.

Dowd is also credited with pioneering the use of multitrack recording and other techniques that became staples of popular music production. His impact was chronicled in a 2003 documentary called Tom Dowd & the Language of Music.

While the Hall is best known as a celebration of performers, I’m glad it makes room for people like this whose massive impact goes largely unnoticed.

[Verse 1]
What’ll you do when you get lonely
And nobody’s waiting by your side?
You’ve been runnin’ and hidin’ much too long
You know it’s just your foolish pride

[Chorus]
Layla
You’ve got me on my knees
Layla
I’m begging, darling, please
Layla
Darling, won’t you ease my worried mind?

[Verse 2]
I tried to give you consolation
When your old man had let you down
Like a fool, I fell in love with you
It turned my whole world upside down

[Chorus]
Layla
You’ve got me on my knees
Layla
I’m begging, darling, please
Layla
Darling, won’t you ease my worried mind?

[Verse 3]
So make the best of the situation
Before I finally go insane
Please, don’t say we’ll never find a way
And tell me all my love’s in vain

[Chorus]
Layla
You’ve got me on my knees
Layla
I’m begging, darling, please
Layla
Darling, won’t you ease my worried mind?
Layla (Layla)
You’ve got me on my knees
Layla
I’m begging, darling, please
Layla
Darling, won’t you ease my worried mind?

Never heard of him, but certainly deserves Rock Hall recognition.

    Definitely earns this recognition πŸ‘πŸ‘

Great post! The 2003 documentary called Tom Dowd & the Language of Music is not easy to find – Roku says it is available on their channel, but since we replaced our TV with a “smart” tv, surprise surprise, Roku is not an option on that…I was able to start playing the doc online via Roku though. Since I’d prefer to see it on a bigger screen, I searched our library catalog, which is part of a Central Mass network that is quite robust. And huzzah, there was one copy in the network, which I’ve put a hold on. Anyway, thanks Clay for making me aware of this in the first place! And a shoutout to libraries near and far! – Reb
