Song of the Day #6,087: ‘Rock Around the Clock’ – Bill Haley & His Comets

The Comets are another backing band inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame years after its frontman received the solo honor.

In this case that frontman is Bill Haley, who was admitted to the Hall of Fame in 1987, the institution’s second year (after failing to make it into the inaugural class). The Comets would have to wait another 25 years.

With Haley, the Comets released a handful of top ten hits and produced one of the era’s most enduring and successful singles in ‘Rock Around the Clock.’ Before Elvis Presley hit the scene, these guys were the face of early rock-n-roll.

[Intro]
One, two, three o’clock, four o’clock rock
Five, six, seven o’clock, eight o’clock rock
Nine, ten, eleven o’clock, twelve o’clock rock
We’re gonna rock around the clock tonight

[Verse 1]
Put your glad rags on, join me hon’
We’ll have some fun when the clock strikes one

[Chorus]
We’re gonna rock around the clock tonight
We’re gonna rock, rock, rock ’til broad daylight
We’re gonna rock, gonna rock around the clock tonight

[Verse 2]
When the clock strikes two, three and four
If the band slows down we’ll yell for more

[Chorus]
We’re gonna rock around the clock tonight
We’re gonna rock, rock, rock ’til broad daylight
We’re gonna rock, gonna rock around the clock tonight

[Guitar Solo]

[Verse 3]
When the chimes ring five, six and seven
We’ll be right in seventh heaven

[Chorus]
We’re gonna rock around the clock tonight
We’re gonna rock, rock, rock ’til broad daylight
We’re gonna rock, gonna rock around the clock tonight

[Verse 4]
When it’s eight, nine, ten, eleven, too
I’ll be goin’ strong and so will you

[Chorus]
We’re gonna rock around the clock tonight
We’re gonna rock, rock, rock ’til broad daylight
We’re gonna rock, gonna rock around the clock tonight

[Saxophone Solo]

[Verse 5]
When the clock strikes twelve we’ll cool off then
Start rockin’ around the clock again

[Chorus]
We’re gonna rock around the clock tonight
We’re gonna rock, rock, rock ’til broad daylight
We’re gonna rock, gonna rock around the clock tonight

Unless someone like Bill Haley had a notable solo career, I find it odd that the Rock Hall wouldn’t have selected the band initially. I suppose it’s a good thing that they remedied that.

  2. Peg says:

Long live Rock and Roll 🎸
