Throwing back to the week of February 8, 1954, we find the usual host of repeats atop the singles chart.
At #1 was ‘Sincerely‘ by the McGuire Sisters, followed by ‘Hearts of Stone‘ by the Fontane Sister. Then came ‘Let Me Go, Lover‘ by Joan Weber, and ‘Mister Sandman‘ by The Chordettes. The ladies were absolutely crushing it!
A man did occupy the fifth spot that week. Billy Vaughn’s instrumental rendition of a 50-year-old song called ‘Melody of Love’ had been creeping its way into the top five for several weeks, on its way to an eventual peak at #2.
A version of this song with lyrics was charting at the same time, recorded by The Four Aces. It was at #11 the week this version was at #5.
What’s really crazy is that a second instrumental version, by David Carroll, was also moving up the charts. This same week, Carroll’s recording was at #13.
For 11 straight week in early 1955, three versions of ‘Melody of Love’ occupied the Top 20. That has to be some sort of record.
I don’t really recognize this song, though it sounds like something Woody Allen would have used in one of his movies.
It sounds familiar to me and I’m sure my parents had this in their collection of boring records 😊
