I’ll have more to say about My Old Ass when I get to my favorite 2024 movies, but for now I’ll call out one of its most amusing moments — a mushroom-induced hallucination that finds lead character Elliott (Maisy Stella) performing a Justin Bieber song with full choreography.
A previous mushroom trip led to Elliott meeting her older self (played by Aubrey Plaza), and she hopes this one will have the same result. Instead, she ends up fulfilling a childhood fantasy of bestowing a lucky audience member with a rose while singing ‘One Less Lonely Girl.’
Apparently this is something Bieber did in all of his concerts at one point, a memory my own daughters recalled fondly. This is one of many age-appropriate details the movie gets right in depicting the life of an 18-year-old girl.
I also love how Canadian the movie is, and having a musical set piece featuring a Justin Bieber song is about as Canadian as it gets.

Meet Me In Montauk 
This was one of my favorite movies of 2024, and I would have loved if it had been shown some Oscar love.
Meanwhile, maybe I’m not as dialed into Canadian culture as you are, but it didn’t cross my mind that this scene or really anything about the movie was distinctly Canadian, let alone as Canadian as it gets.🤪
