Song of the Day #6,030: ‘Saturn’ – SZA

Male artists might have dominated the top ten of the year-end Billboard Hot 100, but the ladies hold eight of the ten positions in the rest of the top 20.

At #18 is Chappell Roan with ‘Good Luck, Babe!,’ a song I slot just behind Sabrina Carpenter’s ‘Espresso’ on my own Song of the Year lineup. And coming in at #19, with the first of two tracks in the top 20, is SZA.

‘Saturn’ was the lead single of Lana, the deluxe reissue of SZA’s second studio album, SOS. Lana, named after the singer’s childhood nickname, featured 15 new tracks from the SOS recording sessions.

I haven’t heard the reissue, so I can’t comment on its quality, but I do think artists have gone a little too far with the whole “bonus material” thing. I believe it’s all in the name of maximizing streams, or maybe selling a few extra physical copies. A business decision, in other words, more than an artistic one.

I guess the counterargument is that there is no harm in giving fans more songs. Maybe modern artists are just rewarding the faithful.

[Verse 1]
If there’s another universe
Please make some noise (Noise)
Give me a sign (Sign)
This can’t be life
If there’s a point to losing love
Repeating pain (Why?)
It’s all the same (Same)
I hate this place

[Pre-Chorus]
Stuck in this paradigm
Don’t believe in paradise
This must be what Hell is like
There’s got to be more, got to be more
Sick of this head of mine
Intrusive thoughts, they paralyzе
Nirvana’s not as advertised
Therе’s got to be more, been here before

[Chorus]
Ooh (Ooh, ooh)
Life’s better on Saturn
Got to break this pattern
Of floating away
Ooh (Ooh, ooh)
Find something worth saving
It’s all for the taking
I always say

[Post-Chorus]
I’ll be better on Saturn
None of this matters
Dreaming of Saturn, oh

[Verse 2]
If karma’s really real
How am I still here?
Just seems so unfair
I could be wrong though
If there’s a point to being good
Then where’s my reward?
The good die young and poor
I gave it all I could

[Pre-Chorus]
Stuck in this terradome (Ooh)
All I see is terrible (Ooh)
Making us hysterical (Ooh)
There’s got to be more, got to be more
Sick of this head of mine (Ooh)
Intrusive thoughts, they paralyze (Ooh)
Nirvana’s not as advertised (Ooh)
There’s got to be more, been here before

[Chorus]
Ooh (Ooh, ooh)
Life’s better on Saturn
Got to break this pattern
Of floating away
Ooh (Ooh, ooh)
Find something worth saving
It’s all for the taking
I always say

[Post-Chorus]
I’ll be better on Saturn
None of this matters
Dreaming of Saturn, oh

[Outro]
(Ooh, ooh, ooh)
(Ooh, ooh, ooh)

  1. Dana Gallup says:

The release of “”bonus” material has been going on for decades, arguably started by the likes of Bob Dylan with his bootleg albums and carried on by Elvis Costello in his rereleases with lots of bonus material. I’m sure the motivation is a mix of generating more sales and giving ardent fans more music from their favorite artists.
