Song of the Day #6,021: ‘I Feel Fine’ – The Beatles

When The Beatles’ ‘I Feel Fine’ showed up as the #1 song the week of December 29, 1964, I assumed I had featured it on the blog already. After all, I posted 80 Beatles songs as part of ‘Beatles Weekends‘ alone back in 2009.

But somehow I never got around to this one, The Beatles’ sixth #1 in 1964 (a record for a single calendar year). The Beatles would nearly repeat that feat the following year, scoring five #1s in 1965. I look forward to encountering those in coming installments of Throwback Weekends.

‘I Feel Fine’ is notable for showcasing an early example of the studio experimentation for which the band would become known. This is one of the first tracks (certainly the first popular hit) to feature guitar feedback. You’ll hear it at the beginning of the song segueing beautifully into John Lennon’s iconic riff.

Baby’s good to me, you know
She’s happy as can be, you know
She said so

I’m in love with her and I feel fine

Baby says she’s mine, you know
She tells me all the time, you know
She said so

I’m in love with her and I feel fine

I’m so glad that she’s my little girl
She’s so glad, she’s telling all the world

That her baby buys her things, you know
He buys her diamond rings, you know
She said so

She’s in love with me and I feel fine, mmm

Baby says she’s mine, you know
She tells me all the time, you know
She said so

I’m in love with her and I feel fine

I’m so glad that she’s my little girl
She’s so glad, she’s telling all the world

That her baby buys her things, you know
He buys her diamond rings, you know
She said so

She’s in love with me and I feel fine
She’s in love with me and I feel fine, mmm
