Song of the Day #5,934: ‘Feel Good Inc.’ – Gorillaz

Continuing my look at the albums of 2005…

Yesterday I wrote about an album that just isn’t for me. Today’s album falls into another category: one that may well be for me, but I don’t see myself ever taking the time to find out.

As I get older and have more albums to hear from the artists I already love, I find it increasingly harder to add new finds to the mix. That goes for current releases but especially for releases from years past. I’ve finally come to peace with the idea that I’ll die having not heard plenty of great music.

That’s kind of a dark sentiment with which to introduce Demon Days, the second studio album by Gorillaz.

This “virtual band” was formed by Blur frontman Damon Alban and comic book artist Jamie Hewlett and features a rotating cast of musicians depicted in videos as cartoon gorillas. Their music is a mix of alternative rock, hip-hop, and electronica — groovy ear candy.

Demon Days saw the band team with producer Danger Mouse, who helped them stretch into more adventurous musical territory. The result was their top-selling album, and one that featured their one and only top 20 single in ‘Feel Good Inc.’ (on which they were accompanied by De La Soul).

It’s a great listen, one I wish I had discovered at the time. This album might have turned me into a Gorillaz fan and plugged me into their whole catalog (eight albums and counting, including their most recent just last year).

But, alas, that didn’t happen. So I’ll have to settle for a cursory review of the album during a look at the releases of 2005, then move on with my life. My apologies to the Gorillaz.

[Intro: Maseo & 2-D]
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Feel good
Sha, sha-ba-da, sha-ba-da-ca; feel good
Sha, sha-ba-da, sha-ba-da-ca; feel good
Sha, sha-ba-da, sha-ba-da-ca; feel good
Sha, sha-ba-da, sha-ba-da-ca; feel good
Sha, sha-ba-da, sha-ba-da-ca; feel good
Sha, sha-ba-da, sha-ba-da-ca; feel good
(Change, change, change, change)
Sha, sha-ba-da, sha-ba-da-ca; feel good
(Change, change, change, change)
Sha, sha-ba-da, sha-ba-da-ca; feel good

[Verse 1: 2-D]
City’s breaking down on a camel’s back
They just have to go, ’cause they don’t know wack
So while you fill the streets, it’s appealing to see
And you won’t get out the county ’cause you’re damned and free
You got a new horizon, its ephemeral style
A melancholy town where we never smile
And all I wanna hear is the message beep
My dreams, they’ve got to kiss me ’cause I don’t get to sleep, no
(Beep)

[Chorus: 2-D]
Windmill, windmill for the land
Turn forever, hand in hand
Take it all in on your stride
It is ticking, falling down
Love forever, love is free
Let’s turn forever, you and me
Windmill, windmill for the land
Is everybody in?

[Verse 2: Trugoy the Dove]
Laughin’ gas, these hazmats, fast cats
Linin’ ’em up like ass cracks
Play these ponies at the track
It’s my chocolate attack
Shit, I’m steppin’ in the heart of this here (Yeah)
Care Bear repping in harder this year (Yeah)
Watch me as I gravitate, ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!
Yo, we gon’ ghost town this Motown
With yo’ sound, you in the blink
Gon’ bite the dust, can’t fight with us
With yo’ sound, you kill the Inc
So don’t stop, get it, get it (Get it)
Until you’re cheddar headed
And watch the way I navigate, hahahahaha
(Ha! Haha! Haha! Haha! Ha!)

[Bridge: 2-D]
Sha, sha-ba-da, sha-ba-da-ca; feel good
Sha, sha-ba-da, sha-ba-da-ca; feel good
Sha, sha-ba-da, sha-ba-da-ca; feel good
Sha, sha-ba-da, sha-ba-da-ca; feel good

[Chorus: 2-D]
Windmill, windmill for the land
Turn forever, hand in hand
Take it all in on your stride
It is ticking, falling down
Love forever, love is free
Let’s turn forever, you and me
Windmill, windmill for the land
Is everybody in?

[Outro: Trugoy the Dove & 2-D]
Don’t stop, get it, get it, peep how your captain’s in it
(Sha, sha-ba-da, sha-ba-da-ca; feel good)
Steady, watch me navigate, ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!
(Sha, sha-ba-da, sha-ba-da-ca; feel good)
Don’t stop, get it, get it, peep how your captain’s in it
(Sha, sha-ba-da, sha-ba-da-ca; feel good)
Steady, watch me navigate, ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!
(Sha, sha-ba-da, sha-ba-da-ca; feel good)
Sha, sha-ba-da, sha-ba-da-ca; feel good (Hahaha!)
Sha, sha-ba-da, sha-ba-da-ca; feel good (Hahaha!)
Sha, sha-ba-da, sha-ba-da-ca; feel good (Hahaha!)
Sha, sha-ba-da, sha-ba-da-ca; feel good (Hahahahahaha!)

  1. Dana Gallup says:

I’ve never heard about this band, album or song before today, and I’m fine with that.🤪

  2. Robert Butler says:

Our son, who in 2005 was 13, turned us on to this song, and I am forever grateful – not that I ever explored any other Gorillaz work – for this delectable piece of ear candy.
