Song of the Day #5,928: ‘Chicago’ – Sufjan Stevens

Continuing my look at the albums of 2005…

I had to include this album in my 2005 rundown because it is one of the most critically-acclaimed releases of that year. However, Sufjan Stevens’ Illinois (or Come On Feel the Illinoise!) is a record I’ve just never been able to embrace.

I want to like it. It’s an ambitious indie folk opus by an artist who has a knack for the kind of melancholy music I’m usually drawn to. But it’s way too artsy-fartsy for my taste.

I do love the idea of dedicating an album to a U.S. state, with each song referencing historic people and events. Steves did this once before, with 2003’s Michigan, and stated when Illinois came out that his intention was to write an album about each of the 50 states.

He later admitted that was a joke, but it’s a joke I have long wished was meant seriously. Even if I’m not crazy about this album, that’s exactly the sort of ambitious project I can get behind.

[Verse 1]
I fell in love again
All things go, all things go
Drove to Chicago
All things know, all things know
We sold our clothes to the state
I don’t mind, I don’t mind
I made a lot of mistakes
In my mind, in my mind

[Chorus]
You came to take us
All things go, all things go
To recreate us
All things grow, all things grow
We had our mind set
All things know, all things know
You had to find it
All things go, all things go

[Verse 2]
I drove to New York
In a van, with my friend
We slept in parking lots
I don’t mind, I don’t mind
I was in love with the place
In my mind, in my mind
I made a lot of mistakes
In my mind, in my mind

[Chorus]
You came to take us
All things go, all things go
To recreate us
All things grow, all things grow
We had our mind set
All things know, all things know
You had to find it
All things go, all things go

[Bridge]
If I was crying
In the van, with my friend
It was for freedom
From myself and from the land
I made a lot of mistakes
I made a lot of mistakes
I made a lot of mistakes
I made a lot of mistakes

[Chorus]
You came to take us
All things go, all things go
To recreate us
All things grow, all things grow
We had our mind set
All things know, all things know
You had to find it
All things go, all things go

[Outro]
You came to take us
All things go, all things go
To recreate us
All things grow, all things grow
We had our mind set (I made a lot of mistakes)
All things know, all things know (I made a lot of mistakes)
You had to find it (I made a lot of mistakes)
All things go, all things go (I made a lot of mistakes)

  1. Dana Gallup says:

A completist doing an album for each state would probably be a record label’s worst nightmare!🤣
