Throwing back to the week of September 21, 1974, we find Barry White atop the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘Can’t Get Enough of Your Love, Babe,’ a soul classic that I wrote about when covering the albums of 1974.
In the #2 spot was ‘Rock Me Gently’ by Canadian singer-songwriter Andy Kim. The song eventually hit #1 and was Kim’s only chart-topper in the U.S., though his ‘Baby, I Love You’ had reached #9 five years earlier.
I had never heard this song, and listening to it for the first time I would have sworn it was Neil Diamond. Apparently I’m not alone in that based on multiple web threads making the same point.
I have heard ‘Baby, I Love You,’ but not by Andy Kim. It’s a cover of the Ronettes classic. His other top 20 hit was a version of their ‘Be My Baby.’ Was this guy some kind of stalker?
Ain’t it right
That you are with me here tonight
The music playing
Our bodies swaying in time
(In time, in time, in time)
Touching you
So warm and tender
Lord, I feel such a sweet surrender
Beautiful is the dream that makes you mine
Mmm
Rock me gently
Rock me slowly
Take it easy
Don’t you know
That I have never been
Loved like this before
Baby baby
Rock me gently
Rock me slowly
Take it easy
Don’t you know
That I have never been
Loved like this before
Oh, my darling
Oh, my baby
You got the moves that drive me crazy
And on your face
I see a trace of love
(Of love, of love, of love)
Come hold me close
Don’t let me go
I need you, honey
I love you so
You were made for me by the stars above
Oooh
Rock me gently
Rock me slowly
Take it easy
Don’t you know
That I have never been loved like this before
And baby, baby
Rock me gently
Rock me slowly
Take it easy
Don’t you know
That I have never been Loved like this before
Rock me gently
Rock me slowly
Take it easy
Don’t you know
That I have never been
Loved like this before
Ain’t it good
Ain’t it right
That you are with me here tonight
Rock me gently
Rock me slowly
Take it easy
Don’t you know
That I have never been
Loved like this before
Baby, baby
Rock me gently
Rock me slowly
Take it easy
Don’t you know
That I have never been
Loved like this before
I’m not familiar with this song either. Not among the pantheon of great songs IMO.
Andy Kim is also the man behind “Sugar, Sugar” by the Archies – a song I am sure you are familiar with. In the 80’s Andy Kim recorded under the name Baron Longfellow and had a few radio hits under that name. He is still recording and is active in some great charity work at Christmas where he gathers both popular and up-and-coming artists for charity concerts in Toronto and Montreal at Christmas time. I was lucky enough to see a show a few years ago that had Tom Cochrane, Men Without Hats and Ron Sexsmith on the bill. It was an outstanding show. He is highly respected in the industry in Canada.
